ztmikeMark for moderationPremium join:2001-08-02 Michigan City, IN | [Verizon] Which femtocell to get? Switched to Verizon Wireless from AT&T Wireless and at home my signal is pure crap. So I was looking at Verizon's femtocell (Network Extender) And they want $250 for it..yea right.
So I looked on eBay and found a 3G compatible one (I guess the newest version of the network extender) and a older model, the question I had was why would I need my carriers 3G when I'm using my wifi connection? Since I would have my home broadband connection to use since well..it would be powering the network extender.
Couldn't I just buy the older model and save a bit more money? Was there any other updates to the 3G compatible model that would make it a better purchase?
I do believe the amount of concurrent callers was increased by a little, but I'm the only one in the household who has Verizon Wireless..so that feature would be useless.
Here's the 3G model »www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-SCS-2U0···482e90f9
And what I believe is the older model »www.ebay.com/itm/VERIZON-WIRELES···47f76024 |

 | Call verizon and tell them you can't get any service where you live and they might waive the $250 fee. They've done it in the past. |

Its the one I have. And it works great!
I couldn't get Verizon to waive the price, but they did knock it down to $150.00. *** It also works for voice and data/web on AT&T and Sprint. (no texting though) Might even work for other carriers, but only the above mentioned have been to my house and been able to connect to it.
Good luck on your choice...stay on Verizon with your complaints, and they will drop the price. Not easy to get it free in my book. I'm in the red on their coverage map, yet get very bad reception. And that was the weapon I used to try and get it free. But they only knocked the price way down. -- Long you live and high you fly, and smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry, and all you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be. |

ztmikeMark for moderationPremium join:2001-08-02 Michigan City, IN 1 edit | Just got off the phone with Verizon..lady transferred me to the network center told them I was a new customer and that I was getting horrible signal with 1X data speed in my home, guy asked what phone I was using and then after going through where I lived he tracked down 2 towers that were nearby and I repeated myself saying my service sucked in my home and then he asked what service was like outside of my home told them 1-2 bars.
Then said he would create a ticket and send a network guy out and test the area guessing near my location and then would get back to me in 72 hours to tell me what he came up with. I told the guy well how is he going to take measurements for signal strength for being inside a home, he came back with a reply of the guy will have ways to duplicate that during his testing.
I then asked at the end about a discount or a freebie of the $250.00 network extender (femtocell) and the guy pretty much said it will depend on what the local Verizon Wireless guy comes up with in his testing and what he will recommend.
From the sounds of it if he does recommend it they'll only give me a discount on it as he was going on about having to be a longtime customer for people getting free network extenders and that there's no contract on those so their basically giving them away.
I'll probably just end up buying the old version (2nd link in my OP) Won't need mobile 3G if I have my home wifi connection and don't need the more than 1 simultaneous ongoing call on it. |

| Sounds good that they are going to send out someone. I was told they don't do that out here anymore.
I been a long time customer of them. 10 some years at least. Wish they would have offered a free one to me. But I am still very happy. It has excellent range, and my wife and myself don't have to worry about dropped calls, standing in the right place, etc. any more.
Hope the "can you hear me now" guy confirms the bad signal, so you can at least get a good discount. -- Long you live and high you fly, and smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry, and all you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be. |

| reply to ztmike Love my sprint femtocell. They do it right. Give it free and no monthly cost. I could always use the wifi in home but I don't want to leave it on since it will drain the battery quicker. With perfect reception 3g data speeds are flawless anyways. -- Usenet Block Accounts | Unlimited Accounts |

BiggA join:2005-11-23 EARTH | reply to ztmike I have the stupid Microcell. I wish AT&T would do it right and do Wifi calling like T-Mobile. Such a better solution than more hardware.
Who cares about 3G? Just use wifi for data. |

ztmikeMark for moderationPremium join:2001-08-02 Michigan City, IN | reply to ztmike Well..Got the call..first call I didn't answer because I didn't recognize the number, was a New Mexico number but the guy left a voicemail I returned the call when I got off work..
Basically I was told my general area of where I live is a dead zone and the best they could offer me on the network extender was $180..
The thing that pissed me off the most was the guy that left the voicemail said and I quote "Your area does have signal problems, and there is no solution at this time." he made it sound like there was a known down time in my town, when in fact it really just came down to my area being a dead zone.
I'm just going to buy the old femtocell off ebay for like $90 and save some money, no use for mobile 3G if I'm using wifi. |

 | reply to ztmike If it's a known area with issues, I'd demand a free one. Threatening to leave and go to another provider might work too. |

I am in a known dead zone and Verizon admits it. (after I signed up!) So I told them how their coverage map lied to me saying everything was in the red. And that's why I got an account with them, and I couldn't see why they making me pay for this extender. I went through that for several phone calls to them, and they only knocked it down to 150.00 I still feel I was ripped off, but glad I got some discount. And buying from them, if it ever goes bad, I get a free replacement for the life of the contract. That's why I didn't try to find a cheaper one off ebay or what ever.
They are crooks for sure, but the best service in my area hands down. -- Long you live and high you fly, and smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry, and all you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be. |

ztmikeMark for moderationPremium join:2001-08-02 Michigan City, IN 1 edit | I decided to cancel Verizon, took the phone back yesterday. I was hoping they would give me cash but all they said they could do was put the money back on my debit card, so now..I can't buy a phone till that money gets back on my account.
Which sucks because T Mobile has a deal going on for their Galaxy S2 that is over after today.
I did plenty of research and T Mobile seems to be the best deal for me in my town, they got the free wifi calling feature on the phone I want and they offer their 42mbps 4G here with the 5GB cap on "high speed" which beats out the rest besides Sprint..but their coverage here is the worse.
But yea..I canned Verizon because I was getting pretty shit poor coverage all around town and slow 3G in most places, although it worked great in other towns surrounding me with LTE but LTE is not here and wouldn't help the poor voice coverage.
All in all I was pretty amazed just how shitty their customer support was to after them being rated #1 in customer support. When I went to return my Galaxy Nexus to the store I bought it (ECellularConnection) the guy said he could probably get me a free femtocell if I stayed with Verizon but I kept telling him no I want to cancel due to poor ass coverage and shitty customer support, he then was saying how he got great coverage here in town and was even asking me where I lived so he could go test it out on his phone.
Sucks because I loved the phone but their coverage just sucked here.
O and another thing that I told the guy at the store, I was like well Verizon purely puts my home location in their covered areas, yet their own network center over customer support is going to tell me I'm in a dead zone? Can you say false advertising? I'd say something to the BBB but not going to waste my time. |

BiggA join:2005-11-23 EARTH | reply to ztmike Coverage is always approximate. Does any other carrier offer coverage? If none do, then you're just in a bad spot. If others do, and Verizon doesn't then they need to get on those towers. |
