Putting Video Files Into iTunes?

I have a number of video files that I would like to import into iTunes, that I would then like to play through my Apple TV. Most of them are in .wmv format, but a number of them are in different formats. I am running the latest version of iTunes.

What's the best way to import them? They will not import in the format that they are now. Thanks.

Convert them using Handbrake.

Just FYI ...if you are going to view the videos on iPhone or iPad or iPod ...you can download the "Movie Player" app and it will take ALL formats (no conversion needed) and play them. The app also places itself in iTunes and you can load videos into it via iTunes. Mini-easy instructions show as soon as you open the app

Works beautifully ...I use it for Xvid files

I have a question. The video files that I am alluding to, are ones that I currently watch on my Mac with VLC. If I use Handbrake to convert them so that I can import them into iTunes, will I still have my original copies that I can still watch with VLC?

If you don't delete the originals, yes. Handbrake creates new files; it doesn't alter the original file.

I understand ...It was just FYI .....and good information for others as well. Someone randomly mentioned the app in another thread and I was happy to read it. I had been converting everything to .mp4 format when I didn't need to for my iPad or iPhone.

And VLC will also play .m4v files. So you can keep the original .wmv or delete it and just use the .m4v on Apple TV and VLC.
