| Queens College Bans Smoking On Campus If youre going to light up a cigarette at Queens College these days, youll have to stroll out to Kissena Boulevard and smoke with the traffic.
The college has joined its CUNY siblings by banning all tobacco products on campus, including cigarettes and chewing tobacco. The ban, which went into effect New Years Day, arrives earlier than the tobacco-free policy which will soon govern all CUNYs in the fall of 2012.
Even smoking outside is now prohibited on all of Queens Colleges 77-acres, a policy championed by the university as another step toward a more environmentally-conscious campus.

| reply to legendNYC It's a disincentive for smokers. When students have to walk off campus to light up, they'll think twice about smoking.
The only way this will be effective is with strict enforcement. There needs to be a monetary fine, not just artificial peer pressure. |

 | reply to legendNYC Smoking I get and am glad for, but why chewing tobacco? As long as they aren't spitting on the ground on campus or any of the school's property, I don't see the big deal about that. -- "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use." - Galileo |

 | Maybe, but not necessarily. I don't smoke or chew tobacco, so I don't know how much or often one needs to spit when chewing, but I'm assuming a garbage can would suffice. -- "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use." - Galileo |
