Re: Why are snowy roads like these never closed?

Heres a better question: Why dont people that live in these areas even have AWD vehicles??????????????????????????????????

FWD, RWD & AWD + ICE = no traction.

In one of the videos you can clearly see a white SUV spinning away all its wheels and still siding backwards.

That's the issue, people think that technology will somehow bend the laws of physics to their favour and drive like twits. Most of the time these twits drive like twits even in perfect weather.

Yep, unless your running studded or tire chains on your car or truck your just spinning more wheels.

Does all-wheel drive actually help in winter driving?

If you drive a vehicle with AWD or 4WD drive keep these rules in mind.

1. You may be able to get going much better than 2WD vehicles but you cannot stop or steer better. AWD only helps acceleration.

2. If you drive a vehicle with AWD or 4WD you should have winter tires on all four wheels. It’s the stopping and steering that will save your life and AWD does not enhance these aspects of active safety.

3. Slow down as there may be less grip than you are experiencing while accelerating.

All of the above, as well as "know your limits". If the roads aren't salted or sanded, DON'T GO. If you don't have snow tires, DON'T GO. Most of the stupidity in these videos is due to lack of awareness and poor equipment.

There were plenty of AWD/4WD vehicles in that video sliding around. Look at it again. Thane_Bitter See Profile hit the nail right on the head. "FWD, RWD & AWD + ICE = no traction".

Remember Dallas last winter? How about Atlanta? Or Seattle just recently?

No, never again... Made it to work in downtown Dallas with a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500, rear wheel drive, all season tires, no chains they are illegal on the roads within city limits.
