Where did my space go?

Is there an app or something that can tell me where my space went?

I have a 120G SSD..
I have 83 Gigs free.

I know 11 Gigs is from iTunes
3 Gigs from Apps

And I am thinking Lion takes 10 gigs..

So I am missing like 5-10 gigs...

I'll second disk inventory x, also, as other poster mentioned, it likely is local backups, which you will have to open additional pane with above said program.

You can use an app called Daisey Disk in the APP store. I had the same question as you six months ago. I installed the app and found that one of my apps kept growing, it was doing internal backups. Once I deleted the app all my disk space came back.

There are two places to consider when looking for missing space in Lion. 1) there is a local time machine back up that changes size and 2) the recovery partition keeps a full copy of the Lion installer on the computer.

The recovery partition can account for as much as 4GB of drive space, maybe more depending on the exact configuration of the computer. Time machine will adjust the amount of space that it needs, this can be a little or a lot depending.

The recovery partition is only 650MB on my laptops, Mac mini, and iMac. You can check from terminal.app using "diskutil list"

Thanks,

How do I disable it and get rid of it?
Do I even need it?

Yes, you can disable sleep image, it's disabled on my machine. You have 8GB of ram, hence the 8GB sleep image.

Remove sleep image: in Terminal:

sudo rm -rf /var/vm/sleepimage

Disable hibernation so sleep image doesn't come back:

sudo pmset hibernatemode 0

Someone can correct me if I am wrong on the above.

Disable local-backups:

sudo tmutil disablelocal

Can't recall how do delete that local back-up file, it's been a while, however, I believe it will disappear eventually.

You need it if you don't want all your currently running apps/documents to be lost when the power goes out.

The two commands to disable Safe Sleep are on that page.

But why turn it off? You'll "save" 8GB - you have 70+GB free. What's the issue?

BTW: For the local TM backups, IIRC, it eventually takes you drive down to 10GB, after which is no longer takes any more disk space. FYI.
