Re: Google to Mandate User Tracking - No Opt Out I guess they must in that that's when and where you got it. God bless their slimy little hearts. It doesn't seem as if you're missing anything. |

 | reply to therube I got that nifty little email from Google, even though I've never used their services. No gmail, never got around to it. Which leads one to wonder why ... and how they came up with my email address.
Interesting. |

1 edit | reply to Noah Vail Unless already posted; Microsoft claims it has alternatives to some Google products
Edit:
The MS our tracking-warez are better than your tacking-warez are all over Security Sites.
• Example:
From Silicon Valley
LOS ANGELES -- Microsoft took out full-age ads in major newspapers Wednesday, slamming privacy policy changes at search rival Google (GOOG) that allow it to merge user data across its services.
Microsoft offered up its own Web-based alternatives, saying for instance that users of its free email service, Hotmail, don't have to worry about the content of their emails being used to serve up ads.
The attack ads appeared in papers including USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and New York Times. They followed an overhaul of the way that Mountain View-based Google handles user data, which the company announced last week. The aim is to streamline more than 70 privacy policies into one main document plus about a dozen others.

Re: Google to Mandate User Tracking - No Opt Out By linking services and sharing information "we can make search better -- figuring out what you really mean when you type in Apple, Jaguar or Pink," she said. "We can provide more relevant ads too.
"We can provide reminders that you're going to be late for a meeting based on your location, your calendar and an understanding of what the traffic is like that day," she said.
Merging the information about its users appears to be a bid by Google to glean a more integrated view of its users, an advantage enjoyed by Apple and Facebook.
"Companies everywhere want to break down product walls to get a 360 degree view of customers," said Larry Dignan of technology site ZDNet.
So there is no turning back for Google to not push ahead with this. My andriod needs to signed in to a gmail account to use the app market.....and they clearly want to know what my events calender says.

quote: Because we have come to rely on web services so much in our day-to-day activities, it simply isn't an option to stop using search, webmail, and social networking. But there are ways for heavy users to keep a low profile so that, should Google turn decidedly evil, you won't be completely at their mercy. If you are concerned about the amount of information that Google knows about you for whatever reason, here are some techniques you can use to guard your privacy online.

| Apparently OPTING OUT is just a cookie setting and you can "OPT OUT" here
»www.google.com/settings/ads (SCRIPTS MUST BE ENABLED FOR THIS PAGE TO WORK)
When i goto the page it already says I AM OPTED OUT..... (Which i knew as i dont have any stored cookies from them (OR FROM ANYONE AS I CONSTANTLY CLEAR THEM)) |

Re: Google to Mandate User Tracking - No Opt Out If you have an android cell, you are linked to Google if you use Market.
However, for any purchases from another retailer like Amazon - I use a Yahoo account. Or GMX. Always have. I had the Yahoo account since before Google anyway. FB is linked to a throwaway Yahoo account. I get all mail in Thunderbird anyway.
I have no reason to use a calendar online. I have the phone set to no sync on any account - when the account is on 2 other computers, syncing makes a mess.
I'd love to see what Market would give me as advertisements - I've mostly bought Astronomy and nature guides. No games, no social, no links. (you can get the weather app from your local station on market)
As of now - Google can't do a search right anyway. If I did a search for jaguar printed fabric, I'd get the animal, the car, or the football team.
I turn off images, too. Don't see a lot of ads. Started doing this when those damn blinkies were popular. |
