@he.net

[Newsgroups] Usenet any safer than Megaupload?

Is Usenet any safer than Megaupload? I'm planning on switching to Usenet and grabbing a Yearly subscription but could Usenet go the same route as Megaupload/other filesharing websites?

Could it? Yes, anything is possible. It would take some law re-writing (read- political bribes changing hands) though.

EDIT TO ADD- Megaupload was a centralized system. Usenet by its nature is decentralized so there is no one entity to go after to shut it down.

well lets hope not, if the internet gets any more fragmented/controlled, then what is the use of paying for it?

Who is to say they are not already being monitored? Quickly checking the privacy policies of a couple of providers I was not able to find any information regarding user logs for the following providers: Usenetserver and NewsDemon. Although, I may have just easily overlooked or missed something. Others are a little unclear on wording, i.e giganews. Astraweb has recently disabled paypal, coincidence or does it relate to the MegaUpload take down? I believe they are based out of Singapore. All your personal info is already tied to an IP address and username. Although, my tinfoil hat may just be on a little tight..

The 'we keep no logs' claim is probably total bullsh!t anyway.

Usenet providers do keep logs, of uploads, for spammers and such. I doubt most keep track of what you actually download but maybe the amount your download.

With SSL, no one is going to know what you are downloading except the provider. Just downloading data off their servers, you can pretty much count yourself safe. Uploading data on the other hand isnt' so safe and if push came to shove they would probably sell ya out if someone pushed them to do so. Even so, a lot of uploaders know ways to get around that...

Usenet downloads have not been a problem for the entire history of the Universe.

Well, I'm safe then because nothing I download is "copywrited"

Most likely just coincidence. Paypal screwed things up for some merchants and their checkout systems this week by changing payment emails. Hard to imagine that just a small change of the "From:" field breaks checkout systems, but lots relied on it. Astraweb may have to just make emergency repairs to there paypal code. »www.auctionbytes.com/cab/cab/abn···/i26/s02

What a nitpicker.

Yeah I was just joking but I think the threat to usenet being targeted is starting to grow. It's more popular then ever.
