Google slow

Started recently: When I do a Google search it takes quite a while a while for the first Google page to show up. The following searches seem normal. As I only have Hughes connection so I was wondering if this is an issue with Hughes, Google or just me. Anybody else seeing this?
PS: regular browsing seems to be ok.

Are you logged in to Google? That will slow a satellite user waaaay down.

Yes, I'm logged in to Google but it was way faster couple weeks ago. Once inside Google it's working fine.

Did you notice that everything you do, including basic searches is https? There is no way to make that fast over high-latency connections.

That became automatic just a few weeks ago. Prior to that you were only https for things like gmail.

A few weeks ago? This will explain this and no, i did not notice it until now. Thanks... I, guess I will use Bing for searches now.

I didn't notice it until others pointed it out. Reason? I don't have "Stay signed in" checked for Google. Happens that I have more than one Google account, so staying signed in was always bad, but it is also the way to avoid this, at least for now.

Yes it began 2 weeks ago for me.
My gmail and even Google search will get timed out.

A local friend with the same 9000 modem system is seeing different web sites fail to load.
No pattern of sites involved.

Edit in : later I will switch over to Wild Blue to find a better answer.

It's horrible. I wish there were some tweaks other than logging out. It happens on all https sites.

google started securing their searches a few months ago. When they first introduced it, there was an option to turn it off but they seemed to have removed that option and are forcing users to use https.

The slowness of secure pages was probably the most annoying aspect i found when i had hughesnet.

Yes, I am now on WB and it's NOT Hughes causing a slowdown of Gmail or Google search.

For what it's worth Google is starting to scare me with this tracking cookie crap that could happen next month with their privacy policy.
Getting too personal like Face Book with tracking.

I have a Google account and got an email from them today to let me know how great it is that they merged their policies for all their services: Mail, Calendar, etc...
In other words they link your account (and activity) to every service you have from them with the goal to create a "personalized" profile of their customers. And this is really scary.

All of which makes me wonder why someone would want to stay signed in. When I actually need to sign into Google (merchant accounts with adwords, checkout, and custom search, or youtube, or whatever) I click the sign-in box and Firefox presents me with my multiple Google accounts to choose from. They will have a lot of trouble profiling me, as I log out before searching (as much for speed as anything else).

Sure I will log out after a session on one of their websites from now on. Hopefully the other millions of users will do the same thing but I doubt it. The majority of the users do not experience a slow https connection and therefore they are not wondering what is going on. One advantage of having satellite connection...

Google and the others always have trouble tracking me.
Google Analytics is the only one on this page, CNN has about 8 blocked, a total of 777 with auto updates.

Also free is »cs.nyu.edu/trackmenot/ a must have.
