[BC] Streaming troubles

Ever since last night I've been having trouble streaming on all devices. 3/5 youtube videos stop buffering half way in, and netflix on the wii is constantly rebuffering.

Zero packet loss, download speeds are fine, games are fine. I've tried opendns, unblock-us, and shaw DNS servers, all with the same problem.
I am using the DPC3825 with BB100 in Port Alberni, which I have powercycled a couple of times. Possible that it could be due to the storm a few days ago (I live in the middle of a forest and there was a tree down over the powerline), but I assume that would show signs other than trouble streaming.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

I also have been having a hell of a time with youtube lately. Running on Businesss BB50, rocking my own DNS, DHCP and Proxy, DNS pointing to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Anyone else having issues as well? Speedtests are still good, just youtube for me.

The only thing I've noticed is that they've changed their buffering again. Used to be it would load as fast as it could, until the whole video was downloaded. Then they did a fast buffer for the first bit of a video, and then slow buffered the rest.

Now, if I pause a video, buffering stops until I start it again. That's new.

However, having no problems watching videos properly.

It's probably another peering issue again as always. There are times that YouTube is great, and there are times where it's slower than dial-up. It doesn't matter what ISP you use.

I noticed the same issue over the weekend. I also noticed that some videos work great, and other videos just sit buffering or don't load and the behavior for each video is easy to reproduce on other machines.

Other providers seem to be having the same issue, as well as a possible fix.

doesn't help for me on any device. Speeds are looking perfect, tracerts look descent as well. Even have my own DNS server pointing directly to google. Not sure what the heck is going on, but it's extremely painful to watch videos buffer every few seconds.

Rusty, did you try what was stated in the Telus thread?

said by pstewart:

For what it's worth (I'm not on Telus) - I started recently having issues with 1080P videos. I right clicked on the video, went to settings and changed the "amount of hard drive storage allowed" or similar... changed it to much larger and now it works great.

Hope this helps

Paul

Yes, doesn't help. Today tried on a couple customers terminal servers with same result. Even tried at our shop which is only a few bonded T1's through Telus and even worse than Shaw. Would think Business packages would have a higher priority over a residential so these things wouldn't even happen.

With TELUS and Shaw connections both suffering, it may be geographic issues with Youtube's CDN?

I like your theory.

I've been pretty annoyed/frustrated as well lately.

I did notice some slowdown on Youtube, but it is much worse on The Comedy Network's site where I often watch The Daily Show. Videos basically come to a full stop every 30s-1.5m and will buffer for about 30s-1.5m.

It has become unbearable so now I'm watching on the American site.

The Comedy Network's site has a feedback link but it doesn't lead to anything much.

Not sure if the issue is with TCN's site or Shaw or somewhere in between. Too lazy to go through it, just watching the American site now.

I noticed occasional buffering issues with my video from netflix, but my issue appears to be caused by my 2008 Airport Extreme Time Capsule because it seems the capsule locks up once a week at least and becomes unavailable on the network but leaves web surfing working. I have to physically remove the power cord and wait 1 minute and then insert power cord and once rebooted it is fine for awhile. Not sure if this helps anyone.

P.S. I guess it is time to upgrade to new equipment.... sighs.

Switching to HTML5 fixes it for me
