[Rant] Driver Updating Software

Seriously... do we really need driver updating software? Yes, you're right in thinking that I'm talking about software that searches for driver updates for you, downloads them, installs them, all with a single click. Alright, maybe more than a single click but you get the idea.

So... why do people think that they have a need for "driver updating software?" Yes, people actually pay for this kind of stuff! Case in point... PerfectUpdater for $39.99, scratch that... $29.99.

Now onto the reason why I'm ranting.

Usually drivers are the kind of stuff that I don't really worry about. If I need them, I find them and the need usually is because maybe something is broken in it or a game needs an updated driver. Case in point... nVidia drivers. But, usually I leave them alone because I'm of the firm belief that if it ain't broke... don't fix it! Don't update for the sake of updating... only update if there is a need for that update!

So unless that driver has a massive issue, like if your game crashes or the wifi card driver caused your machine to BSOD under load (yes, that happened to me with an Intel wifi card driver), don't touch your drivers! And if someone is trying to sell you a piece of software that claims to do it for you... don't just walk but run, run as far away as you can and as fast as you can. I swear to God this shit is like snake oil!

Now, before I have people come in and say that updaters are bad I'm going to say right now that not all updaters are bad.

Secunia PSI and FileHippo's updater are two perfectly acceptable auto-updaters. I use them myself. But, those aren't exactly suggesting updates to software that is at the kernel level!

And don't even start with me on the driver updates suggested by Windows Update! Oh God... I had a very bad experience with that.

Part of the problem is that when people do a web search for "xyz driver", many of the sites will be those 3rd party programs. Some merely have no idea that they can go to xyz's website to download them and instead blindly click on whatever looks promising.

that's because they are too busy googling bing so they can bing google so they can then search for xyz's extremely simply xyz.com url

I know what you mean
I've had those fail and somehow remove the working driver

Or worse some download sites practialy hide the real download link and have an ad that looks like a download link
