| Canada's a big place and I can't claim to be an expert but I have some exposure to Canadian ISPs. Based on what I hear from their customers, I'd suggest:
Speeds are generally lower than in the US. Competition is limited, just as it is here, although that varies widely by region. Hard, low caps with overage charges are the norm. Throttling is common. Some smaller ISPs who use the big boys' infrastructure are incompetent. Their federal bureaucracy seems to exist only to protect the industry and not the consumer.
There's a general Canadian Broadband forum here in addition to individual ISP forums. Those would give you a better picture of what's going on up north than my generalizations. |

| You think there is issue's with oversold nodes now, give them speed offerings for them prices, and see all the complaints about speed issue's. I do agree prices should be cheaper though with how low upload speeds are. I would love to save $25 on ultimate a month, but them prices are no where near to happening. I remember a little while back with all the news of canada ISP's capping and with low caps. But from them offerings at least Shaw is offering good speeds at a good price with decent cap offerings. Sadly none of this can be said for Cable ISP's in the US, best pricing for internet speed's and such in the US is from FTTH providers, which is a very limited in it being available to most people. |

whenever other countries can offer higher speeds for less 2 main reason is population density as the U.S. has one of the lowest,as you see below Europe and Asia which we all know has some of the best speeds offered to their people have a much higher density so with more then 4x the customer on say the same size network in north America they can afford to charge less and still make a profit, also if you look at a majority of the countries located in Europe and Asia the average income in these countries are much lower then the avg income in the U.S.
Population density of the continents:
North America - 32 people per square mile South America - 73 people per square mile Europe - 134 people per square mile Asia - 203 people per square mile Africa - 65 people per square mile Australia - 6.4 people per square mile
income by country »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co···r_capita
another major reason these countries have higher speed at lower prices is most of them their government helped build their network or flipped the bill on which is nice but on the flip side there is so many laws over there with copyright issue and file sharing and filtering site it makes the U.S. look like a day at the park so the grass is not always greener on the other side.
last its just a reality that everything in life goes up be it gas, food, housing medical and adding competition only plays a very small role in pricing.
now depending how you look at it the internet has gotten cheaper,i remember in 2006 preferred internet was $42.99 for 9mb down which is about $4.77 per meg. this year it was $49.99 for 18mb down which is $2.77 per mb down. so yes while the over all bill is higher your getting more for your dollar |

| reply to jchambers28 A part of the lower cost is that the Canadian Health Insurance system costs less per employee and retired person. That keeps business cost increases lower than they might be otherwise. Occasionally some of the savings is passed on in the form of lower prices or better services. |

| reply to jchambers28 Interesting options for "Unlimited Data" in those plans. Pay $20 more per month, $114.90 to $134.90, and go from 1TB to "Unlimited" on going from the Broadband 250 to the Unlimited 250. »www.shaw.ca/Internet/Compare-Plans/ |

Rates listed are for NEW cusomers only and promotional for six months[IIRC cox offers/offered "any speed tier for six months at $19.99/mo] only good thing i see is they give 100gb more on the cap at 50mbps level. |
