Re: [connectivity] FIOS CAT5 to Linksys router possible? In that case it's clear what he's dealing with. The apartment landlord is the account controller, FiOS ONT is connected to the landlord's router, and one of the primary router's LAN connection terminates in the OP's apartment.
Unless OP knows the FiOS router login/password, landlord controls everything. OP's router couldn't handle the WAN network being the same as its LAN, hence the 127.0.0.1
Makes sense now. Some days I'm slow. |

 | Sounds exactly what's going on bird!
And if you guys are still around,
Is this kind of setup normal for apartments or no? This building is 3 years old so it's fairly new.
I mean can the managers look at my traffic and / or get into my local network? This building has a lot of tenants and its three floors.. So maybe 80 people? My guess is they can. And does it even matter?
I'm just curious. |

Apparently your building is providing a router. The outside address of the building's router is the 173.60.x.x IP address reported by whatsmyip.com. And the 192.168.1.17 IP address is the DHCP address handed to you by the DHCP server in your building's router.
This does not appear to be a conventional VZ MDU installation with a shared ONT. The landlord would appear to have a FIOS business account that is shared by some number of tenants, such as one FIOS account for each floor.

No, not normal. This does not make sense. I know that you said that the FiOS equipment in your closet looked dead. Are you sure? You could open the customer access cover on the ONT and see if any of the LED's are lit. I'm just curious. |

I second lijacobs 's suggestion to check out the equipment in the closet. It could be active, but that would also be unusual since the account would be in the landlord's name and service is included in your rent. -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.

 | reply to marctronixx As others have stated, you have a verizon FIOS router SOMEWHERE that you're plugged into when you connect directly to the wall. The reason why you had to change your router's IP to something other than 192.168.1.x was because as default, it's WAN and LAN IP would both be in the same subnet - so it wouldn't know which interface to route traffic. Switching the LAN IP of your router to something else put both interfaces on different subnets and the result is....internet.
I would ask the building management the location of the router and who manages it. Not that it may make any difference for you if you know where it is or isn't. |

 | there are cable/phone/data closets on each floor. im not really concerned what the setup here is. I have internet and i am happy.
whats in my closet is just a box that has one cable, which looks to be a thin fiber optic cable stuffed in there.
ive not ever seen the fios box you install in your home so i dont know if this fiber cable is supposed to connect to that or not? again just a box that you open up and reveals a fiber optic cable. nothing else is in the box in the closet. no other "equipment".
yeah i know why i had to change the ip address. it all became clear once i paid attention to the ip that was leased to the broadband card on the laptop.
lol i am a bit curious myself but i dont think its worth it to go bug the manager about the setup. what i do know is there is TW cable/roadrunner in this building also because initially i had roadrunner pumped thru the wall plate--and consequently i did not have to change the linksys routers default ip address.
its when i asked then to increase my bandwidth is when that day i had fios coming out the wall plate and my router was not working...weird huh? how can the roadrunner and THEN the fios come out of the same wall plate?
yeah im curious too! these cats dont own the place, they just manage it for this wealthy guy who owns several buildings across the country. the husband of this manager team is always travelling to these other units weekly. he is not here in the city at the moment and his wife is clueless (she told me so ).
yeah i didnt think it was normal but im new to SOCAL and the west coast and there are a lot of things not normal out here in los angeles..
I appreciate all of your responses though. wish i could give more info... |
