When I turn it on, the image appears for around 2-3 seconds, accompanied by a slight hissing sound...sounds similar to an air leak. After the 3 seconds, the sound stops and the backlight shuts off. I can still see the dimmed image on the screen. Same behavior every time I turn it on.
I've never ripped into a monitor before, but have been doing some reading...does this sound like it would be the inverter, since the backlighting does come on each time? I did find a few other similar complaints on the same model in my searching, but no consistent advice on how to fix, if it's worth fixing. I even found a youtube video of a guy that took his apart and found the ends of the backlight tubes were burned. -- The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth |

| it sounds like you might have bad capacitors on the power board. if so, it should be obvious when you open things up and have a look. these are not overly difficult to replace, just need a decent soldering iron/etc and replacement caps.
i often order from Mouser but for small quantity, Radio Shack should be fine. When replacing, try to match the capacitance and meet or exceed the voltage and heat ratings. If you can't match the exact capacitance, can go over by a bit. A "bit" might vary wildly. Sometimes, +100% is ok. Other times, +20% is pushing it. There is no way to know for sure, I think, without going over the schematics which I am not competent to do anyway.
Luckily, these things usually use common values... 470uF, 1000uF, etc. -- My Site |

tahoejeffPremium join:2001-07-01 Wisconsin Dells, WI | reply to tahoejeff Thank you both for the responses. I once had a motherboard with bad caps, and yes it did make a similar hissing sound before crashing.
I found similar monitors for around $160 new, so decided this one was going to the recyclers. For that kind of money, not worth trying to figure out how to remove the trim. Thanks again! -- The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth |
