 | Data cap update Can anyone confirm if these so called data caps are being enforced? I've been downloading over the 150gig per month cap for several months now and no warning or extra charges on my bill. |
|
 | I been DL about 200GB a month for 7 months now and nope, no extra charges, no warning emails, and the same message in my USAGE METER page for almost 1 year now:
can't show your usage, don't be concerned if you can't see it, blah blah blah |

| reply to chilipalm99 Same here in Central Georgia, same do not worry message. I am wondering if defections to higher data rate cable internet services might be causing AT&T management to rethink the whole cap scheme for hard wire services. Also if you have customers who are using AT&T POTS and AT&T DSL and AT&T cellular it presents an interesting conundrum. AT&T has been pushing customers who have WiFi equipped smartphones and devices to use WiFi when possible to reduce projected network congestion. This assumes the WiFi is connected to a fiber, coax cable or twisted pair phone/DSL connection. Why would you want to discourage that usage with low monthly caps? You told the customer on the one hand to try WiFi first, but then you punish them if they were to use it significantly. If I had customers with both cellular smartphone and ADSL/VDSL accounts, I think I would go no caps as an incentive to stay off the cellular network. I would include a very basic local POTS for E-911 support. I might even encourage secure guest networking or even some form of open WiFi access, that does not compromise the customers data, to promote WiFi use by WiFi equipped cellular devices and smartphones. I would be doing everything possible to encourage AT&T business customers to provide WiFi hotspots. Cellular wireless will never handle all the possible mobile device data usage. Carriers like AT&T have a chance to change what is meant by network management. |

 | according to my Attorney Friend, who is all against CAPS with Comcast and AT&T and other ISP:
I guess this is as a result of the fact that AT&T can't deploy the program successfully or the system isn't efficient. What does it cost to monitor everyone's accounts only to find that less than 5 to 8% are going over the cap? You spend a couple of million dollars creating and implementing the cap program and end up collecting only $10,000 a month on overages and add the extra costs dealing with the public over the program. |

jpkjeff join:2012-02-09 Oklahoma City, OK | reply to chilipalm99 Think again. I got the letter stating they were going to start capping DSL usage back in May, and at the time I was only using 100-125GB per month. However, once I installed a wireless router and began allowing a roommate to use the service my usage jumped to between 140-180GB per month, but I still got nothing in the mail. Then in November I hit 198GB and this time I got both an email and a snail mail notice stating I had exceeded their cap and while I would not be charged "this time" if I did it again-ever-over the life of my account-I would be charged $10 for each 50GB I went over the 150GB cap going forward. In December I used 177GB and I was charged $10 extra. That bill was due on 2/1, and I called them that day and essentially told them to remove the $10 charge or I would cancel their service and go to Cox HSI (I live in Oklahoma City). The rep was (surprisingly) helpful and removed the charge, then tried to push me to U-Verse. When I pointed out UVerse ALSO had a cap (albeit 250GB) he insisted that the cap for UVerse was not being enforced and even though AT&T's own TOS online and elsewhere say otherwise, he kept saying they had decided against a cap on UVerse. At this point I am still planning on dumping AT&T and moving to Cox, simply because I refuse to pay for a service that restricts me, especially when their competitor has no such limitations in place (and offers faster speeds at lower prices). |

Dear AT&T High Speed Internet Service Customer,
We want to remind you that your AT&T High Speed Internet service includes 150 gigabytes (GB) of data for each billing period.
You have exceeded 150 GB this billing period.
We'll waive the charges for additional data this month and notify you as your usage approaches 150 GB in future months.
The next time you exceed 150 GB you'll be notified, but not billed. However if you go over your data plan in any subsequent billing period, we'll provide you with an additional 50 GB of data for $10. You'll be charged $10 for every incremental 50 GB of usage beyond your plan. |

 | reply to chilipalm99 For those with uverse services has anyone heard any other news whether they are going to forgo the data caps?
I see above that a CSR told them they are not going to implement them but I think right now they are just running into technical difficulties. Once they get those resolved i am sure they will be eager to start charging uverse customers more money too. |

 | reply to chilipalm99 In case you think data capping constitutes internet overcharging (or at worse, outright censorship from the Internet), please see a Change.org petition to stop AT&T and other ISPs from data capping:

| reply to chilipalm99 I've written an article about the whole problem and what this will end up costing Americans down the line (like other countries) here.
it includes a call to sign the above petition as well as announcing the beginning of a broader US cap investigation project (which we'll be building a better/specialized tool towards) |

 | reply to chilipalm99 Its hard not to hit the data cap. Since I switched to suddenlink I've noticed it doesn't hit that cap and I'm using the internet the same way.I have a 250gb cap now but I don't even hit 150gb. Its because ATT also counts the upload data. Other DSL providers just count download data. |
|
 | reply to chilipalm99 I still get the can't show your usage, don't worry. I still try to be careful because I don't trust att. I guess it is good to be in an area that is behind in technology. |
