[CATV] SageTV and Insight

I've been using SageTV on my PC running a HVR-2250 for a DVR with Dish Network for years now. I was thinking about switching to Insight, as that's who I have internet service through. I don't understand much about things running 'in the clear' and all that. Will I have a problem switching to cable TV?

Shouldn't have any issue, esp. if you aren't using cablecard.

In the clear is just the channels that Insight is providing unencrypted to QAM tuners such as your HVR-2250. Insight is pretty heavily locked down these days so don't expect much. Depending on your area you will get at least your local affiliates such as NBC,ABC,CBS,FOX,PBS you may additionally get things like Discovery, WGN, CW, UPX and TBS.

I'm in Louisville BTW. So now I run my Dish box to the 2250, and have no problem using Sage to record shows for playback later. Running the Insight box to the 2250 would only get local channels?
Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I've never had cable. Always had Dish. I'm not even sure what a cablecard is!

I am in Louisville. I use windows media center with some HD Homerun boxes and have 4 tuners with all local stuff in HD (plus a couple others like Weather Channel) and all the rest of basic cable in digital non-HD.

Insight has all of the basic cable stuff in clear QAM and and digital tuner can receive them.

The money I save by not having their equipment has more than paid for my Windows Media Center, not to mention its 1000x better than the cable boxes/PVRs.

I could care less about HD on the basic cable stuff frankly its not worth the cost. Many of the non-HD signals are the HD signals just scaled down into 480 now, and they look worlds better than the old analog cable signals as it is. All the shows I want to watch in HD are from the local broadcast anyway.

Here is a list of all the unencrypted QAM channels you can get with your home built PVR:

Have they not converted Louisville to all/only digital yet? Once that happened in Lexington we lost pretty much all basic cable channels except the locals and 2-3 others.

@insightbb.com

I'm actually right outside Louisville in Southern Indiana, so I guess it's all the same. I guess with them being bought out, no telling what is going to change.

My 2250 only has a coax input. So would I just run the cable line straight into it and skip the box?

My other question is, if the cable line ends up encoded down the line, could I just get a Colossus card which takes component and run an Insight box to it for recording? Just making sure I'm covered before dropping Dish.

I'm just amazed that so many people use HTPC's if all they can get is local channels, so I'm afraid I'm not understanding correctly.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes you would run the line straight to your 2250.

People in your situation (with a carrier who has transitioned to digital channels with encryption) only will get the Locals +/- a few others. Other people who have tuners that accept cablecards (a small card that is inserted into the tuner that provides a decryption key for digital channels) will largely receive the entire lineup.

I am not certain about the Colossus card however you shouldn't ever have any less channels than you will right now as the FCC has rules for cable co's that require unencrypted tuner access to broadcast channels.

@insightbb.com

The first 100 or so basic channels are all digital QAM and all unencrypted, so all you need is a regular digital tuner TV card for your computer.

Like I said here is the list of what you can get WITHOUT a cable box, and without a cable card, and just using a TV Tuner Card that supports QAM digital.

I really appreciate all the info. Just out of curiosity, does Insight offer tuners with cable cards for folks running HTPC's? The Colossus outputs in component, so I figured that wouldn't be a problem and would be the way to go if I wanted HD (I'm only SD now). The 2250 is just SD.

I don't think so. I can't imagine they would want to lose the potential profits from VOD which is not accessible from HTPCs generally.

HTPCs would support VOD and PPV if Tru2Way was fully adopted and Insight (as well as other MSOs) wrote the necessary apps for them.
