Photos of parrots taken around 7am. The first group shows them on the cable wires behind my house waiting to feed. The second group shows them scarfing up my persimmons.

There was a Special about the Parrots of California a short while ago.

They must be both a treasure and a plague! Your photos show there great number and uniqueness.

Yup, that was The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill . Pretty fascinating story and interesting to see they are still thriving.

Wild parrots are very noisy and skittish. That's why the tree pics are thru the window.

When I lived in Ocean Beach, CA (a beach community in San Diego), there were numerous flocks of non-indigenous birds. From Amazon Parrots to Blue and Gold Macaws to Military Macaws and even Cockatoos.

At some point in the late 80s/early 90s (IIRC), a pet shop caught fire and the owner was kind enough to let all the animals out of their cages. At this point, they were free to roam and very few were ever able to be recaptured for domestication.

We lived there around the turn of the 21st century. My mom, for years, had owned a Blue and Gold Macaw named "Big Bird" that she'd purchased from a then-friend whom had gotten in way over her head. My mom is an animal lover and bonded greatly with the bird. Eventually, as we were pretty poor, the parrot had to go. She did everything she could and found him a decent home. Shortly after selling him, Big Bird escaped from the new owner's home. We were gone from the area by 2001.

Around 2005 or so, my mom had been up and down the west coast. She made frequent stops in Ocean Beach to see old friends. Near the pier, she stopped at the Rite Aid. There was an older couple excitedly looking around and pointing to the top of a nearby palm tree. My mom turned to see what they were looking at. On the top of the tree were two full grown Blue and Gold Macaws. One of the birds started squawking loudly and flapping its wings. The bird quickly flew down to a cart return railing and squawked even louder. My mom, said "Big Bird?" and held out her hand slowly. The bird hopped right on her arm and let her pet him.

After a minute or so, my mom obviously incredibly happy to see her old macaw, Big Bird flew from her arm to the top of the palm tree. It was at this point she noticed very small bird close to the other macaw. It was a baby.

I love this story. My mom has had so many disappointments and struggles in her life.

The parrots are interesting, but I would really like to have the persimmons. They make the best tasting jelly in the world and around here they sell for $1.50 each.

What fun to see so many parrots "in the wild". I've never seen one outside of a pet store.

@Drew - I love the story about your mom and Big Bird. That is amazing!!

The voices may not be real, but they have some pretty good ideas. . .
