 | Internet disconnected and now my speed has dropped tons. I pay for 8 Megs, usually my westell 7500, says something like 9500/800
and now suddenly it only says
DSL Speed (Down/Up): 2657/531 Kbits/sec
I've noticed a huge drop in my performance and connection. I am in Northern Indiana and I don't know what to do about this. I've had speed drop issues but I've never actually had the speed clock in at such a low speed it had almost always been what I posted originally, I believe somehow my service got changed on their end. |

First thing to do is connect the modem at the NID and see what the results are. If it gets better, you have an issue with filters or your inside wiring. If it stays about the same, you have a line or a modem issue. If you have access to another modem, check and see what the results are with it. Call CL support for a line check. If you can't get anywhere with them, send an email to: talktous@centurylink.com |

 | reply to EmoHobo Is the NID where the line comes into the house? |

It is usually a gray box on the outside wall. It should have a test jack you can connect the modem to. Using the test jack disconnects the house wiring. |

1 edit | reply to EmoHobo I am on the phone with them now and they said they think there might be a problem as they can't even pull the stats from the Westell 7500 Gateway I have, he said something about noise causing the issue, I'm on hold now, so I'm just waiting.
Edit: Just got off the phone with them, they basically saying that I have all kinds of noise in my signal leading to packet loss, speed loss, errors and disconnections.
They have scheduled a tech to come out and hopefully this will fix this issue. |

billaustinthey call me Mr. BillPremium,MVM join:2001-10-13 North Las Vegas, NV kudos:2 | You could have a failing modem. I suspect it is an outside issue. There could be some water intrusion in a junction that has started corroding and is causing havoc on the line. It could also be a failing port on the DSLAM. Request someone to come out and test the port, and the line between the port and the NID.
The tech should be able to find the problem. I would still test at the NID to rule out your inside wiring and filters. |
|
 | Got someone coming out, they know that their is a noisy/bad line, but I don't know if they know exactly what is causing it, but I'm sure once they spend some time out here they can figure it out. |
|
 | reply to billaustin I'm not sure how to do that with the location of the NID, because my connection just comes from a hole in the wall with a wire fed through it, it's not even a phone cord, it's just a long wire that connects to a small grey box and then a phone cord comes out of that and into the Modem.
Is there any way I can get them to test this for me? Also, the inside wiring is all supplied by them only six months ago. Everything was installed fresh as we had no phone outlets in this house. |

billaustinthey call me Mr. BillPremium,MVM join:2001-10-13 North Las Vegas, NV kudos:2 | They should do all the necessary testing. Ask them to check the wiring while they are there. If it's only six months old, it should not be a problem.
They should test at the NID as part of their diagnostics. The problem is very likely somewhere between the NID and the DSLAM. |
|
 | Yeah, I'll ask them to check the wiring when they come. |

 4 edits | reply to EmoHobo DSL Speed (Down/Up): 4961/895 Kbits/sec
So this improved some on it's own, but I hope it's not like all better when they come out to look at it or something.
Edit: Anyone know what this might mean?
Edit 2: Does this mean someone was already out there working on it and they didn't tell me? I don't understand what's going on. Should it just increase like that? I really hope they didn't come by and work on it yet because it's not fixed.
and it's getting better still: DSL Speed (Down/Up): 5253/531 Kbits/sec
Well at least download but upload went down, it's kind of weir dhow much variation I'm getting, can't wait for them to fix it.
Edit 3: and now it's back to what it was or close DSL Speed (Down/Up): 9096/895 Kbits/sec
This fluctuation can be pretty insane. |

I still got a 660 Series modem.
Can ya get a westell modem like at bestbuy? |
|
 | No idea this one was supplied to me. |

 | This is what me and the other guy in the other thread was saying the other day. I could put money on it that it's all part of upgrading and growing.
If we want them to be better and more reliable, they have to upgrade the equipment, and for them to do that you will see disconnects and up and down speeds. I did for years with Comcast, I was with Comcast when they only had 1Mb down. ( AT&T BI )
Wait for over a day before reacting, I know that sounds dumb but it's all part of growing. They will make money off you having them come, just think. If it's a big problem everyone else will complain.
Anyways just a thought. I know the years I dealt with it, there was times I got so mad but in the end all of the disconnects and speeds changes was wroth it.
Peace, Nugz |

 | reply to EmoHobo Well no one came to visit me today, they better come tomorrow, I'm paranoid about them doing it without showing up and them not fixing the issue, because I'm still suffering of speed and disconnect issues here. |

| reply to EmoHobo My Westell 7500 was doing the same thing.
When this happened, If I'd disconnect/reconnect the phone line from the modem during a peak time the downstream rate on the modem would stay the same.
If I disconnected/reconnected the phone line from the modem at a non peak time, the downstream rate would jump back up to above 6 meg.
I then picked up a cheap used Zyxel 660 modem for a few bucks and that thing never dropped connection and my downstream rate stayed at a solid 6 meg. I had bought this modem as a cheap backup and it of course is not a wireless router like the Westell.
I then bought an Actiontec modem with wireless, at first it stayed pretty solid like the 660. After several weeks it started doing the same thing as the Westell and it eventually got to the point that it was dropping connections every hour. I then plugged the 660 back in and it's rock solid and never drops connection or the downstream rate. That confirmed for me that there's some kind of issue with the Actiontec and Westell. Amazingly, even though the Actiontec was over 30 days old, Amazon sent me a new one next day mail without me even returning the defective one!
At this point the 660 has been running so solid that I've not been motivated to try the new Actiontec Amazon sent me. |

 | reply to EmoHobo Well it wsn't during peak hours when the original disconnect happened it was 5:30 AM, plus the guy on the phone at Century Link said there was severely high noise levels on my signal which is usually the sign of a bad line. |
|
 | reply to EmoHobo Just dropped and retrained at a lower speed.
DSL Speed (Down/Up): 8712/895 Kbits/sec
I hope they show up to fix this.

1 edit | reply to EmoHobo Working with a tech now, he said the synch to the DSLAM was fine and my actual speed was 6.5 megs, which is way lower then the 8 I pay for, but he said that was out of his hands.
He's now checking the outside lines, internet just came back up and I don't yet know the results.
He said it was a problem down the road an open/dirty wire or something like that, he was gone for about twenty minutes, came back and said he got it fixed but without being able to duplicate the issue while he was here, I shouldn't be afraid to call back if the problem persists. |

Nope, what I posted was...IF my disconnects happen during peak hours it retrains at lower downstream rate when I reconnect. IF it disconnects at non-peak hours it retrains at a higher downstream rate. When I use the 660 it's not an issue as it never drops the connection like the westell and actiontec did. |
