Re: Brighthouse Tampa - Why is the tuning adapter so expensive

said by jmandawg:

Hi all,

I just ordered a tuning adapter for my media PC setup. What i don't understand is why they are charging $3.80/month for it. After a quick search on the internet, it seems like most providers are offering them for free if you are already paying for a cableCard.

Anyone know why it's so expensive?

J

Tuning Adapter & CableCARD costs - The Facts
Bright House Networks, CC - $2.95, TA - $3.80
Time Warner Cable, CC - $2.00, TA - Free
Charter, CC - $2.00, TA - Free
Optimum, CC - $2.00, TA - Free
Cox, CC - $2.00, TA - Free
Comcast, CC - $1.75, TA - N/A (limited SDV)
Verizon, CC - $3.99, TA - N/A

Thanks for the clearification, so it looks like i was initially correct, Brighthouse IS THE ONLY cable provider that charges for a Tuning Adapter.

Thanks everyone for the help/info.

Interesting info indeed. I got the TA from BHN free for one year, and now they charge $4.00/month for it. Seeing as we, the customer, didn't have any say in THEIR switch to SDV, why should we have to pay for a TA that is only required because of what they've chosen to do? Say what you will about CableCARD, but they have to supply CableCARDs due to an FCC mandate.

Actually none of the above is valid now

Effective with your next monthly billing statement (depending on your statement cycle) you will notice Tuning Adapters no longer carry a monthly charge.

This will also be the case for new Tuning Adapter installs for all regions by the end of the week.

Indeed that is good news. I've alerted by blogger friends. Thanks Gary for working the issue!

Awesome News!!! Do we have to do anything, or will it be removed on our next bill?

Edit: Nevermind, read more of the thread. Thanks!

Now that Brighthouse isn’t charging for the TA it would be nice if they and the other cable companies get Cable Labs to change the rules/standards to allow SDV capability to be included in devices such as Tivo and other cable card tuners. This would save the provider the cost of the TA and get rid of an extra box and wall wart for the users. The TA is more than twice the size of my Hdhomerun 3 tuner cable card tuner box.

Sorry to jump in late, but are the tuning adapters the small boxes that attach to the TV to let you get all your subscribed channels on that TV (but without the menu guide)?

And did I understand correctly that these boxes are now available free of charge?

How many can I get for free? I've got 4 TVs in the house that only get channels 1 - 99 and I'd love to get our music channels and some other "upper tier" channels on those sets that we already subscribe to.

Or am I mistaken about what functions these boxes provide?

No your thinking of a DTA (digital transport adapter) a TA (transport adapter) is for use with a cable card device to get switched digital video channels.

thats not what it is, A tuning adapter allows people with tivo's (or other supported 3rd party tuners) to recieve switched digital programing. The only solution for you to get over 99 is to add a box (or one of these 3rd party devices which end up costing more than a box)

Do companies that use DTA's put digital tier channels on it if you subscribe to them or just basic (formally analog ones)?
