[AZ] Bought a used Cisco 3010, Cox AZ refuses to activate it...

So the issues with my modem rebooting multiple times per day ended up with a tech telling me I had a bad channel coming into my home, which was causing my modem to drop whenever it attempted to switch to that channel (DCC-ACK not received, modem reboot).

Anyway, he suggested I get a cisco docsis 3 modem which holds multiple channels as a way to mitigate this. That sounded reasonable, and he left me with a test modem to try out to see if it would help.

It seemed to help, so I decided quickly to buy a 3010. A quick search of craigslist showed one available locally, so I went ahead and bought it. I brought it home, plugged it in right next to the identical "tester" sitting on my desk, and called cox.

They refuse to activate it, saying it's a "business modem" rather than a home modem. He told me there was nothing he was going to do, and that all I could hope to do is return the modem because they wouldn't activate a business 3010 on a residential line. I was pointing out it's the exact same unit already on my desk and would be identical to anything they sold me, asking why this was an issue, but he didn't give me any good answers to this. I asked him what I should do, and he was extremely ambiguous, basically telling me I should try to return it to the person I bought it from.

I can't reach the person who sold me the modem by phone at this point, so I'm going to go ahead and assume I'm stuck with this modem. I'm just asking here to see if anyone knows what I can do about this. Why in the world is this modem considered "business" when it is physically identical to any other 3010? Is it possible to activate this modem on my account or is there a real physical reason why they will not? Does this tech mean "stolen modem" rather than "business modem", and, if it is a stolen modem (cox property), what in the world should I do with it? My money is gone, but I'm not going to try re-selling this thing if it's stolen property - the tech was EXTREMELY ambiguous about this on the phone and was simply saying he wouldn't activate it without giving me a reason beyond "it's a business class modem". Can anyone here help tell me what, if anything, I can do about this?

I'm going to guess that if you were told it was from a business account that the previous individual wasn't authorized to sell it. In most markets modems are loaned to business customers with the expectation that they be returned up on terminating service.

After hearing stories like this, I always tell folks to get the MAC and check with the ISP to see if they will provision it.

If the seller refuses to give you the MAC, something is not right. Run don't walk away.

Re: [AZ] Bought a used Cisco 3010, Cox AZ refuses to activate it

I went through the same problem when switching over to COX Home Office Business Internet from residential service. COX business refused to activate my residential DPC3010 and insisted on selling me the SAME EXACT MODEL. Yes, I kid you not. After a bit of negotiation, they agreed to comp the modem charge (Neither was as a loaner like on traditional business accounts that use eMTA's w/phone). Long story short, this is clearly an operational issue at COX since CBS and Rez are at odds and compete with one another.

Why they won't activate? Probably a commissions thing. That MAC is assigned in COX inventory system to CBS and as a result, the Rez folks can't touch it. Big companies often segment their inventory to prevent cross channel cannibalization of sales. "ex. We didn't hit out sales numbers because the business team used all the modems". It's unfortunate that segregation survives even after the device is initially sold and the salesmaker gets their commission. It's complete nonsense from an end user perspective.

You can always try escalating with call center management. Not sure how much they can do though. You may be better off talking to the COX retention department.

Calling Cox giving them the MAC and asking them if the modem can be activated would be a good idea before paying for it.

I got to deal with the activation folks a bit when I upgraded my modem and wanted to give mom my old modem. They weren't unreasonable but I did have to jump through a few hoops to get everything done.

And this is why I buy my modems from Cox alone.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I never knew this was even a possible issue - to me, hardware is hardware, I didn't even think of the possibility that it would be hardware they would flat-out refuse to activate...

Had I known I would have been more careful, and considering that the previous owner seems to have blocked my calls now....

I'm just amazed. At first I assumed it must have been a mistake - the guy I bought it off of seemed normal, had a couple young kids, looked reasonably trustworthy, we even chatted a bit beforehand and he was a normal sounding guy - the guy even went so far as to pull his ad and HOLD the modem for me until I could get out to pick it up that afternoon. I usually consider myself a good judge of character and nothing about this guy said "I'm going to take your money and run". I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it seems pretty obvious now that he planned to defraud me all along. I suppose some people are simply criminal in nature, or perhaps he's in a very bad way and "needed" the cash, but this is the first time in a long time that I've encountered this sort of low-form of human being in the wild .

I'm not going to hold too big of a grudge, this falls well below my "hulk smash" level of annoyance, live and learn. Hopefully AZHSIS can help.
