Re: [My Review] Old systems More in theme with the thread, there is one PC someone gave to me a long while back. Here are the specs and in case you are wondering, yes it still runs! Well, it did the last time I powered it up, which must be years ago now.
It's one of those old IBM PS/2 units with an integrated monitor. It wasn't high end even in it's day.
CPU: 8088 5MHz (I think) RAM: 640KB Hard Drive: 20MB ST506/412 (predecessor to IDE/ATA) Floppy Drive: 720K 3.5" Floppy - Yes, 720KB. No, you can't use 1.44MB disks in it. I have to maintain a supply of 720KB floppies just for it. Optical, Network, Modem, Sound Card, USB: Zero. Zip. Nada. Monitor: CGA standard, although it was actually monochrome so no colors at all. Just image a color image being in black and white, and that's how it was.
It doesn't even support keyboards with a number pad, so I have to keep around a keyboard that doesn't have a number pad, just for this PC. Although I think it has some serial ports, so I could attach a mouse if I wanted to.
Since it did have a free ISA slot, albeit an 8-bit ISA slot, I did look into the possibility of adding a network card to connect it to my network. However, the only 8-bit cards I could find were token ring, and I wasn't about to spend a whole lot more money on adapters and so on to make that work with Ethernet. |

 | reply to robman50 Everything you have there is "modern" compared to the old builds I still have laying around (in the "museum") but don't use** from the '80s & '90s: a 286-10 (my "first") and a bunch of 486s. I think maybe one of 'em has more than 96MB of memory, and most of the drives are sub-1GB. Most have WinNT Workstation; one has Win2K server. If I ever bought it, I probably still have it (of computer hardware, that is).
(**I'd turn 'em on, but the noise wouldn't be worth it. Of course, since it's been a few years, they may not actually boot... yeah, I need to clean up a bit.) -- "Sorry for not responding to your post, but either I haven't seen it yet, or what you said was so devoid of substance that I found it utterly uninteresting." |

 | reply to robman50 My web and mail server are currently running on P2 - 266Mhz, 384MB RAM, Windows 2000. No plans to upgrade |

 | I used to own an Asus P2B-DS slot 1 P2 system with 2x 350Mhz CPU's and I forgot how much RAM I had in there but it ran XP Pro okay, well it was not the fastest. It was more of a 2000 Pro machine. But that motherboard shorted out so I gave it to the dump. |

| reply to benc said by benc:To use ISA on any newer platform you would have to be prepared to spend quite a bit of money, making it cost effective in only a few cases. I'm actually looking forward to replacing everything at some point, including the pbx. Moving up to a 486 or newer system with ISA slots will likely only happen if disaster strikes beforehand. Luckily, I can find these fairly easily. -- My Site |
