 | [Help] Power Steering problem please help!!! Ok so my car was working fine than last week I went to bring my kids to school and the steering wheel wouldn't turn. I checked the power steering fluid and it was empty so I filled it up. The steering wheel unlocked and worked again but makes a god awful sound when I turn the wheel. I started to notice a burnt smell and the pump is making a gurgling noise. There is oviously a leak of some sort because I drive my car for about 10 mins and the reservoir is empty again. I just checked the fluid again and now it's foaming. Also my car is pulling to one side while driving. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Is it the pump? Rack and pinion? Hose? Please help. |

 | reply to alero Sounds like the rack & pinion has failed. Look for fluid leaking out of the rubber boots at the inboard and outboard rod ends. By running dry, you will probably have to replace the pump also. The noise you heard is the trapped air in the system being pressurized and circulated. When the pump ran dry, your steering felt locked, but you would have been able to still steer, but with much greater effort. There is always a small amount of fluid left in the pump that it can't pick up and circulate. That fluid got burnt by the heat of a dry pump. That's the smell. |
