Investors don't care about what happens to Verizon in 2 years, so long as they make their capital gains this quarter. And when VZW would tank, they would be more than happy to short it into the ground.

Yeah, that's exactly the problem. AT&T obviously has it too, otherwise they would be building fiber out as fast as they could buy the fiber cable.
