Mom PC again

Original thread: »Basic PC setup for mom

Leaning toward a pre-built - work has been hell and don't have time to research and build. Mom thinks she will be ok with Win7 so that is back and possible.

Was looking at some Dells - I can get a work discount - an Inspiron 620 desktop for about $480 - adding in some support if I am not available. Normal price in the $650 range. i3, decent hard drive - she does not need a huge drive or monitor, decent reviews. Would prefer to get from small business but can't get any deals that way...

Looking at Tiger Direct - bother likes them but I have been dubious of them. They have a couple desktops sold without keyboard, monitor, or mouse.

HP Pro - i3 250 gig HD, 32 bit Win7, i3 2100 and 2 gig ram. About $460.

HP 500B - core 2 duo, 4 gig ram, 500 gig HD, 654 bit Win7 - not sure on price.

Lenovo Essential H420 - i3 2120, 1 TB HD, 4 gig ram, 64 bit Win7 - $450.

I know nothing about HP or Lenovo or Tiger Direct support. Any ideas on any of these. I have never had issues with Dell but I have only had Dell Laptops. When I worked for a county they used Dell desktops for years and had no issues.

I would lean toward Dell and the Lenovo I think - Lenovo is probably a bit of HD overkill but probably not a bad thing per-se...

I'd get an i3 system at a minimum so it will last longer, she should be more than ok with a 250-500GB hdd, and make sure she has at least 4GB even if you have to do that part yourself after buying it as it's so cheap give her 8GB, onboard gpu is fine, dvd-rw, at least a 20+" hd desktop monitor so it's large enough to be easy to read.

You can find these as laptops also around similar prices.

It seems the Lenovo is a better deal, but I doubt they need a hdd that large, but believe it will be a slower 5400 rpm hdd anyway.

Got my mom a Dell 620 slim with i5, 8gb RAM and Radeon 6450 for $600 CAD in the holiday sales. 4-6GB RAM, an i3 and integrated gfx for ~$100 less would've been fine for quite a while but she had her last computer for 9 years so might as well build that one to last.

I compared Newegg builds to the 620's with i3 and i5 they had on sale and it was hard to beat especially after shipping which Dell did for free. I think the hard drives prices, $110 for a 500GB at the time, play a part these days.

As far as the computer itself, looking inside the components were vanilla but the build was tidy even though it was a slim model. It runs quiet. Probably took less time to clean the Dell-installed junkware off of it than to build a computer from parts and then do a clean windows install.

Since you have so much good experience with dell and can get discounts I see no reason not to go dell. Lenovo should also be fine.
