High latency/Buzz on the phone

Stanford, KY

The buzzing on the phone line just started around 5-6 PM today.

Was just talking to an agent who told me the pings I'm getting were fine.

Was told there was an outage and it'd be in March until it was fixed.

I told her about the hum/buzz on the line and she wasted no time in transferring me to another department. All I was able to do there was punch numbers through a machine before it hung up on me.

Whenever there are issues on the voice side they almost always affect DSL. I would work with the voice support at Windstream first before even talking about Internet issues.

BlueArcher is 100% correct. Please call phone repair at your earliest convenience 800-782-6206. If we are not made aware of the issue we can not fix it.

Yeah, I already made that phone call and the machine that kept taking me from place to place was suppose to create a ticket for me.

What frustrated me was the lady that said those pings were fine.

There's suppose to be a tech coming out to the house, according to the DIRECT forum.

That lady has NO idea what she is talking about, A "Normal ping" should be no more then 30 ms.

Where I'm at, I'm happy if I get around 45~. Usually hangs around 65-70 though. But honestly, that 25-30ms difference is unnoticable.

A normal ping should be under 70ms.This is actually considered standard by the majority of ISP in the U.S. The reason for this is no ISP can account for the other networks that your data travels through, things like traffic, line damage or server response can obviously affect your ping time. I have not seen to many 'rural' customers with 2-3 miles of cable between them and the equipment average 30ms ping times unless of course they are Fiber Fed.

I know this is a stupid question and you already have a tech coming out, but is there any chance you checked all of the filters in the house? Could be something that simple.

Yeah, went ahead and checked the filters. I'll know for sure if it's the phone lines the next time it rains. It seems to have subsided for now.

The tech apparently came and gone because no one answered the door. I figured they'd check the phone lines and not need to come in.

If the noise returns the next time it rains please shoot me a message. It is possible if it is weather related that the cables may be damaged. If that is the case it is possible that it could be causing issues for more people than just you. Also it can potentially be a dangerous situation if someone's home phones failed, and I would like to do everything possible to avoid a situation like that.

Yeah, that's what I was planning on doing. Just gotta wait for it to rain. And wouldn't you know it, I just checked the radar and it looks like clear skies for a while.

Alright, it's been raining most of the night and most of the morning now.

[09:02] *** You have been disconnected.

I'm going to guess there's a break in the phone lines again.

Sorry it took so long to respond. It took a while for my deal with the gods to make it rain to go through.
