Re: New customer - Modem Syncs up/down but does not acquire DHCP

Great! Because if it's not, then I end up having to wait another weekend without internet.

I hope the provisioning has been sent in to Rogers, and they're not waiting until they ship it before they do that.

Aside from the fact that there are people on forums from the company that actually pay attention to me (which is very nice), I'm trying to think of any way that Acanac has not completely failed me... hmmm...

I wish I could at least say they always answer the phone when I call, but several times the queue was too long and they system just hung up on me.

I guess tech support was pretty polite when they were giving me bad advice and when I had to explain cable modem basics to them That was a plus.

Oh! I know what's nice. The tech support agents don't have a script. If I tell them I power cycled my modem, they say 'okay' and don't make me do it again That's nice. I like that.

Yay! I'm keeping positive!

I'm seeing an e-mail that my modem has been 'processed'.

Anyone know when I can expect this modem to get online? Immediately when it arrives, or is there some expected delay?

I definitely would be giving support a call to see when the activation date for it is.

After the Rogers person came to activate my line (which I was very worried that Rogers wouldn't come as mentioned in many previous threads from other people..... But surprisingly! Rogers showed up..) plugged in my cable modem (and crossed my fingers, because my worse fear was to have something like what happened to you happen to me... ) and the online light came on... Followed by a HUGE sigh...

Plugged in my router and away it went... Please note, I'm sure you're already aware of it, that Rogers will lock the first 2 MAC addresses that will be allowed on their network... Of course you can spoof it later on if need be..

There's my two cents and experience...

My internet lives, and I'm getting the speeds that were advertised.

I'll be requesting a credit today. I'll let y'all know how that goes.

I'll also be requesting my OpenVPN and free VoIP. I'll let y'all know how that goes too.

Yep.

No surprise there. I was getting the full 50Mbps on my previous Rogers service.

Lynn: If I decide to switch back to 24Mbps, and I purchase a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, is that possible? Do I just support know the new MAC address for authentication? But in the meantime, I do not want to be disconnected from the internet with my current DOCSIS 2.0 modem.. So are they able to authenticate two modems just in case the 3.0 fails?

Because I do not want to be stuck in a provisioning issue like what dbenoy just went through...

You can get your own docsis 3 modem and switch back to 24Mbps. but you will have to email support or call them and ask the to switch your service to the 24Mbps. It should be just a case of an upgrde in service. You are not switching service, just going to a higher speed.

@mmm.ca

Hi I read through this thread but I'm not sure if this has been answered explicitly.

I am currently a Rogers customer but I've cancelled my service and looking to switch to Acanac this month. I own my SB5100 DOCSIS 2.0 modem and will be using that with Acanac.

So right now I'm trying to decide between the 12Mbps or 24Mbps service available through Acanac. I've seen posts saying Rogers will not allow DOCSIS 2.0 modems on the 24Mbps service. But I also see posts saying they are getting "advertised speeds" but I'm not sure if they are referring to their DOCSIS 2.0 modem or 3.0.

Lynn, I gather you work for Acanac. Can you confirm if I am able to get 24Mbps speeds with my SB5100 DOCSIS 2.0 modem? If for whatever reason if I am unable to get close to that speed after I sign up, will I be able to drop down to the 12Mbps package and get a refund for the difference?

Thanks. I'd like to sign up ASAP so your input would be appreciatred.

My understanding is that Rogers will not provision the higher speed on a DOC 2 modem, so you'd be limited to the 12 Mbps tier.

tmpchaos is right when he says Rogers will not provision the higher speed on a DOC 2 modem, so you'd be limited to the 12 Mbps tier.
You can either order our Docsis 3 modem and go with the 24 Mbps. service or go with your modem and the 12Mbps. service.

Maybe this will help explain speeds with modems.
ISPs implement different speed profiles in their networks. Speeds given to customers is primarily dictated by the speed of the modem. So the modem will limit the speed at which you can receive or send data. ISPs put somewhere between 2000 and 4000 customers per 1gbps of trunk links. At any point of time, they expect only a certain percentage of customers to be downloading at full speed. And another percetage to be downloading at a reduced speed and another percentage to be idle while reading a web page or viewing a movie they have already finished downloading. For instance, if you have a 25mbps link and are watching an HD Netflix video, you are only using about 5mbps.

on cable, there are now 2 types of modems, the older DOCSIS-2 and the newer DOCSIS-3 modems.

DOCSIS-2 only talks on one frequency (a TV channel assigned for data transmission). So if that channel is congested because of many customers using the internet at same time, you will see lower speeds.

If you upgrade to a higher speed tier, and upgrade to a DOCSIS-3 modem. These modems can use multiple frequencies at the same time so the odds of congestion are less.

Thanks for the quick response. I've signed up for the 12Mbps service already. Waiting for confirmation from Acanac now.

As promised I'm letting you know how my request for a credit and my static IP has gone.

No response.

Both e-mails sent Feb 03. Complete black-hole. No response of any kind.

I would recommend against Acanac, rvs007. Lynn responds well on DSL reports, but responses from actual support channels is incredibly bad, if you get a response at all!

Even calling them up will result in evasiveness and ineptitude. If one of your requirements is a responsive customer support experience, steer clear.
