 | reply to PilboBaggins To install the latest firefox you need to add the firefox-stable PPA.
Here's how to do it:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install firefox
Hope it helps.

It looks like they're pushing out the update on February 17th. »www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/01/olde···eleases/ |

kontosxyzzy join:2001-10-04 West Henrietta, NY | reply to PilboBaggins You misunderstand the Ubuntu release philosophy. When an OS release is about to be dropped, the software versions that are going to be included in that Ubuntu release are locked. After the OS is published, the only updates that go into the software versions on the system are security patches, and some bug fixes. These updates are not done by upgrading the version to the current upstream version, but by backporting the changes from upstream to the Ubuntu released version. |

 | reply to kontos Hi
I'm pretty sure lucid 10.04 isn't going to be "dropped". Hence the name, "LTS" -- "Long Term Support". I understand security updates and such but shouldn't I not be stuck in like 2.5 years ago with my Firefox version? |

Normally Ubuntu released (even LTSes) don't update any applications aside from security patches. In this case though, they're updating Firefox since 3.6 is going EOL (end of life) in April. I'm not really sure what triggered the decision this time because I'm pretty sure Ubuntu 8.04 always stuck with Firefox 3.0 . I guess they just decided it's time for a change.
I'm with you though, I like to have the latest version of everything. But they're doing this for stability. If you want a newer version of an app, you can try adding a PPA. Someone else can probably better assist you on that. |

| reply to PilboBaggins Here lies the difference between "Long Term Support" and "Latest and Greatest".
As a fellow user of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS I can assure you you're up to date with 3.6.25. It's similar to Windows XP being "supported" but you cannot get IE9. But the Microsoft barrier is far more artificial.
Many suggested the same "Personal Package Archive" (PPA) that I use: »www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppas/14 I use 3 others, too (wine, virtualbox, vlc). They come with some risk but I've personally had good luck. |

jamesvPremium join:2003-03-08 Austin, TX | reply to PilboBaggins Today the usual system updates updated me to Firefox 9.0.1 and unfortunately I didn't notice it until too late. Is there any way to revert to the previous version?
There doesn't seem to be any package for the previous version in the Synaptic Package manager.
I suppose I'll have to recompile it myself - is there an archive whereas older tarballs can be downloaded? |

| Well doggone there it is! Someone at Canonical reading this thread?
It's considered later than the PPA's 9.01 so came up here, too. I was wondering if it might happen before April or not.
jamesv, I see 3.6.24 in lucid-security but I'm not sure I'd trust backwards config. |

You can find the sources there as well as compiled for Linux binaries. The latter can be untared to a folder and might work as is for you. |

| reply to PilboBaggins I'm not sure how ubuntu works, but since it's based on debian, isn't there a backports entry in sources.list, or pinning that could be done to get newer versions of software of your choice? -- ~ Project Hope ~ |

I understand security updates and such but shouldn't I not be stuck in like 2.5 years ago with my Firefox version? I'm sorry. "Dropped" wasn't a good term to use there. What I meant by that was "released." What happens with Ubuntu (especially a long term support release) is that the software that is included in the repos for that release is locked to known stable state. That means there are no new features added, and the software doesn't get upgraded because that could break things. The only thing you get are security fixes, and some bug fixes. |

 | reply to PilboBaggins Firefox 3.5 in lucid-updates is really Firefox 9.01+ I just got updated the other day and had to wrestle my status bar back.
See »packages.ubuntu.com/lucid-update···/firefox
You may need lucid-updates not just lucid and lucid-security if you're looking for the newer stuff. |
