[SW Ontario] Just curious to hear what others are experiencing

I called in and was told there was no ongoing maintenance work or whatever being done in Sarnia but I guess there were upgrades done a month ago in areas of the city. Now in the last week I have had my sports pak channels lag on me when watching them and had audio cut out so I call and complain about that. Now today my internet when last tasted was doing 3 Mbps when I am signed up for 14 Mbps and get that 14 Mbps all the time. I am testing with the speedtest.net site and at one point got 14 Mbps back for like 5 minutes on multiple tests but of course I don't want 5 minutes of what I pay for. During my phone call to tech support the signal was poor and choppy and eventually my phone call dropped. What is going on here ?

btw I was told that they were getting loads of calls from Sarnia area but no mention was made about them doing anything right now about the problems ..... hopefully this will change

others in the Sarnia area who are having problems please post here ... this is just brutal ... tested again just now at 12:33 pm EST and got under 4 Mbps for download

For 2 hrs plus now the speeds are back up to normal at 14 Mbps.

@cgocable.net

Seriously now today is it bad weather causing havoc on my internet ? 14 Mbps no chance. Speeds all over the place. I also had an interruption of service that I don't know how long it lasted because I was asleep for part of it and didn't get phone calls because of it. I am using Speedtest.net and getting 3 Mbps again like I did on other days recently. What is going on Cogeco ?

now lingering between 8 to 10 Mbps and service went down today for a good long time and I have had speeds hit as low as 3 Mbps on Speedtest.net

I created a thing for people to share their results for Sarnia area Cogeco users

I have currently had exactly 1 good year of service from Cogeco in Sarnia following over a year long wait for node splits and infrastructure upgrades (as detailed on this forum, during which my speeds were always under 3-5 Mbps while paying for 16, featuring much help here from Marcer and others but never directly from the company). Not once have the speeds dropped this past year, as you are currently experiencing, whatisit. However, I do get almost daily service drops, usually late morning or late afternoon, for 1-5 minutes at a time; I don't see a reason to complain about that. The DNS servers seem to fail often enough but if it got bad I'd just enter generic ones.

WRT television, the audio drops that were discussed a year ago are still occuring in this area, as well as a general lack of synch on all channels HD or otherwise. It's like watching everything dubbed, much of the time. Frequently after turning on the TV, the station is blackscreen until the channel is changed. The compression on the signal is still very noticable, especially on sporting events, crowds, anything with a busy background or fast movement. True HD, Cogeco ain't. The channel changing and onscreen guide are laggy as hell, also.

Can't comment on the phone as we don't use Cogeco for that.

I am located roughly midtown, if that helps in comparison.

pages loading up like I am on dialup or something .....

last 2 attempts at Speedtest.net got me 3 to 4 Mbps download .....

I have no option but a phone call to get some answers and get a worker out here at some point cuz this is just bad

and what infuriates me is the mention on another site of Bell and Cogeco being the type to traffic shape and thus affecting speeds you can get at times ... stop with this bs but as it says on Cogeco's site they only say you pay for "up to such and such a speed" vs say Videotron with their internet basically guaranteeing you speeds

I am in Sarnia, Sycamore / Indian rd and have no issues at all with my service that I notice, netflix, MW3, 2 WOW accounts going and not noticing anything at all. Torrents are maxing out for the connection, I wish the rest of you in Sarnia some better luck, I just wanted to state that I have not noticed any issues lately at all.

Also before anyone points fingers, No I do not work for Cogeco anymore and I am not sticking up for them. I wish they would rehire me although comments on here led to my dismissal at Cogeco so that won't happen. I fixed many of the issues people on here had with there service when I worked in Windsor and those people know who they are....I wish I could help you guys here in Sarnia and I am not trying to sound like A prick when I am saying I have no issues with my service, I know last year when I lived on wellington and was on the Kathleen node I would have intermittent noise issues causing slowdowns and voip issues. Marcer is top notch so trust him, really good guy and I am more than sure he will get it looked at for you.....he used to call me on many of your guys issues in the past if it pertained to my work area.

I sent the information I believe you need. I just want a reasonable web experience again. My son even noticed yesterday and then today with me when trying to watch Youtube videos it was near impossible. They took so long to load while viewing. Pages continue to partially load or not load at all and forget the idea of even looking at multiple pages quickly at once.

Btw my connection maxs out at 14 Mbps or is supposed to and when using speedtest it says it is going over that but yet I am still having problems. I got those faster speeds when using Google Chrome but still the web experience was still just as bad. I don't get it.

most recent test gives

but really does it mean anything when my web experience is so horrible ?

Troubleshooting has led me to the belief that my router was causing the problems with internet for both my pcs. I tested both with a wired connection to my modem (with no router in between) and now both are working properly. Youtube videos are playing properly and pages are loading up quick. At first when I tried the hard wired connection on my new pc it was not cooperative at first but when I hooked it up direct the second time it worked properly.

... because it didn't work the first time I still consider the possibility that the ethernet port on my new comps motherboard could be the problem but I think over time it will proove out that it is a router problem.

... but who knows ... watch me hook up the same router again and have both computers working properly and efficiently on the net and have it all just be some temporary bug / problem

Troubleshooting is tough

Now I am thinking of calling off the tech coming out on Wed. but I will know more for sure later today. I still want to do some other test like swapping in another router. It will be a totally wired router so a little disappointing considering I could use the Wifi on the other for the HP Touchpad we have.

LOLOL this is getting ridiculous ....

I did do a reset of the router again before connecting it once again to the new pc and guess what .... it is working properly now : Z :S

I don't even know what to say anymore.

Final word from tech today -

It is the cabling/wiring that needs to be repaired either in my home and/or outside of it running back to the cable box for our building. I have a tech team coming again on Monday to do the work. So glad this internet/phone problem was not a hardware issue related to items I own .. router and the motherboard for my new pc (ethernet port issue) as I wasn't looking forward to throwing away a $30 router or RMAing a motherboard.

They also have been getting complaints at Cogeco about problems in the area and today I know for a fact that services were out in my area of Sarnia for 3 hours so they could do upgrade work. I was told this by the tech guy that came today to deal with my cable issues.

Btw want to say the person that was sent out worked hard to restore services that went out for a bit after the first time he looked at the issues I was having and was very friendly and explained simply what needed to be done. Great customer service.

The work was done and my internet experience has been much better. I also have had no problems with my phone either. Now that I have said this it will go bad. LOL

To let Cogeco know the workers definitely were polite and worked hard getting the rewiring done. They engaged in conversation when I had questions and were patient with me when trying to find a person in the building to give them permission to do the work.
