[BC] Shaw techs overloaded?

What's with the long wait-time to have someone sent out now? I never remember it being this bad but earlier in the month I had an outage and they didn't have anyone to send out for almost a week. Now I'm trying to do a move and no one is available for almost 2 weeks.

Depends on the conditions. It's storm season in a lot of places right now, which could mean damaged lines and equipment to repair. BB50 and 100 are also just launching or having the infrastructure put in place to be launched in a lot of smaller areas, and with this issues crop up. Sometimes techs have to travel to other towns to fix issues too

It's the network upgrades and moving Tiers to digital. Eats a lot of resources.

I gotta agree with OP, Shaw has been operating with really long delays on customer service and installer scheduling.

It's quite alright most of the time, since I almost never have to contact Shaw. But...when I do, I have to use unofficial channels like DSLR, rather than calling.

I can understand that Shaw is going through an upgrade, but quite frankly, I notice that companies, people, projects, etc have all been depressed, overworked and inefficient recently:
i.e. HWY-1 in Vancouver was in ruins for over 3 years now...
The water main construction under my windows, which was supposed to be done over summer 2010 and now stretched over into 2 years...

OP here, it looks like I'll be cancelling shaw internet after a good 6+ years with them, always with the top-tier service(like nitro when it first came out). Telus had complete availability at any time block I wanted on the day I wanted for the move, while going with Shaw would have meant going without internet for nearly a week. I haven't used DSL before so this will be a new experience at the least.

Yeah just be prepare for no tech to show up and no Internet for at least a month, and no tech available for another two weeks. That's what happened to my mother. I got fed up with Telus and told them to shove it up a dark place. I then called Shaw and had a install tech out the next day with full working Internet with no issues. Trust me I have a few more reasons to dislike Telus and their unionized attitude of "it's not my job, it's your problem ,talk to someone else" attitudes.

In most places, you're just as likely to receive service from a non-unionized employee (field tech or CSR) as you are a unionized employee. It's not the union's fault.

Only Shaw Vancouver is unionized, as far as I know.

I find sites like customerservicescoreboard and written reviews on places like Urban Spoon are not genuine samples of customer satisfaction.

Pissed off customers look for a place to rant. Happy, content, or apathetic customers do not. So the ratios are likely to be skewed?

I can't tell you how many great experiences I've had at restaurants that were completely torn apart by rants on Urban Spoon.

Just my opinion...

Edit: Yeah, when apple has a "dissapointing" rating for customer service, you know that this site is a bit skewed.

Apple is known to have some of the highest ratings for customer service in the consumer electronics and service industry.

someshawguy

@shawcable.net

Why would you even be looking at the rating numbers? The content of the comments is far more important and all have one thing in common; lack of customer support; long wait times.

The issue has been brought in other forums as well. It is very clear to me and to others that Shaw has been cutting corners for some time.

The OP made the correct move to cancel if he is not satisfied with the service. Then came a certain blatant troll came aboard to spill FUD.

You're totally within your rights to switch to Telus, but unless you're a business, is going without internet for almost a week really so bad that you're willing to change provider?

lol. I would.

10 years ago, probably not. Now with everything so integrated in the internet, I'd be pretty po'd to have downtime of a week. I remember being upset with telus a few years ago. I switched from teksavvy to telus. So DSL to DSL (which is tricky because you can't overlap the service). So telus had to turn it on right after teksavvy turned it off. It turns out telus won't let you order until after, but the rep never told me until after. My order got lost. After a day of no internet, I called back asking what was up, no record of the order. Told me it would take 2 weeks. I called shaw and I had internet the next day

This may be an unofficial channel, but I am logged onto the boards throughout the week to assist if needed. Please pm me or reply to my thread if you're having issues with your services.

Cheers.

IMHO I'd wait for Shaw.

But thats because I like feeling that I'm connected to a water-main instead of a drinking fountain...

OP here just following up incase anyone was interested. The telus tech called me right before the time range for the appointment and let me know about when he was going to arrive so that was really helpful. The guy was really knowledgeable, particularly when I specifically asked for a standalone modem rather than the gateway that Telus usually gives out. Luckily he had one of them in his vehicle, and after some initial teething the internet is pretty darn fast. I get 1MB/s+ on mediafire and I hit 2.6MB/s on a torrent earlier today so I'm pretty happy so far.

The wait times are ridiculously long with Shaw these days, but what's the alternative? Telus? If anyone in the world has worse customer service than Shaw, it's Telus. They're in a race to the bottom.

Since both companies focus their limited resources on new customers to pump up their subscriber count, you'll get faster and better service if you switch providers when moving or trying to fix a serious fault. Wait 3 months, then switch back. You'll get a better price that way too, thanks to insane pricing policies that have loyal customers subsidizing new users with no loyalty.
