its about time

Im tired of seeing all these sub-contractors driving around with ladders tied to the roof of their beat up station wagon or mini-van.

How does a company worth millions allow this to happen?

These subs work only wearing a shirt that says "cable tv" ,driving their own personal vehicles and working without safety gear.

Are you allowed, in New York State, to do work on poles and run wires across streets using a vehicle with PASSENGER PLATES?

I thought you have to have COMMERICAL PLATES when doing work for a cable company who rents space on telephone poles and has right of way priveledges??

Bottom line, if you are taking a ladder of a vehicle and working in the public area (the street, the pole, etc) shouldnt you be a bonafide business?

What if the guys ladder slips off and loses control and crashes on to your car or your kid? Who do you sue? Cablevision? The guy?

Im sure if you sue the guy you will get nothing, I mean who takes a job as a cable tv sub contractor? You have to be desperate for work ,right?

Bottom line, cablevision is know as one of the cheapest cable companies out there

Its about time they are forced to be more responsible and stop low balling the cable employees!

That's exactly what happens when contractors take over a company position... quality goes down, shortcuts are taken, money is saved wherever it can be. Replace a damaged drop wire? Yeah right! Just splice in a new piece.

So when the union-haters say that their TV is pixelating & their Internet is slow, they should stop complaining and be happy that Cablevision uses contractors. Is their bill lower? Well, no but the Dolans are getting more money which is really what's important... isnt it?

the power company does use any sub-contractor / contractor.

They have some but they know what they are doing have and are far from what you see with the cable tv guys.

They use Asplundh to clear trees from power lines

Also I work for cablevison. Contractors do suck because they get paid by the job so in turn they want to do a lot of them. We definitely could get paid more but our benefits are excellent. We get up to a 3% match on a 401k which is good as it gets nowadays and good health coverage that has been getting more costly but so has the rest of the country. Two weeks sick a year, 3 personal days and 3 weeks vacation. If you tell me with the union I will get 40 an hour and keep these benefits I will sign up today.........but of course that can't be guaranteed. They pay for ALL of your tools even if you lose them, they also proved uniforms that you don't need to pay for. You also get 150 voucher for red wing boots every year. Work sucks sometimes, life sucks sometimes, but I guess we will have to see what happens from here......................

all companies use contractors cause of the varying amount of work in the seasons......when colleges get back in session, summertime when people move down to their beach houses, after christmas with people getting new HDTVs.....etc.....no sense in paying in house workers more money, more benefits, and so on when you can pay contractors and use them when needed...

You must be lucky. Triwire is another story.. these install techs do not get benefits as many of them are PART TIME. That's how the story goes. Work rules for a 20-30hr employee are much cheaper than a 40hr employee. Most important being healthcare benefits. If nothing else, this is what triwire employee will fight for in brooklyn. Care to elaborate in the ratio of FULL TIME (with benefits) outside plant employees to PART TIMERS (with NOTHING, but a boot in the ass if they screw up ONCE regardless of time in..)?

This is what happens when you go cheap! Of course the Dolans probably dont use sub contractors ever! But its ok in YOUR home!

Burglary ring posing as Cablevision installers.
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EAST PATCHOGUE - Police have arrested a group of men who they say are responsible for at least a half-dozen house break-ins in Suffolk County.

According to investigators, the leader of the burglary ring was 41-year-old Francisco Sanchez, who worked for Nationwide, a subcontractor hired by Cablevision to install its services.

Sanchez and his alleged accomplices were apprehended Friday, when detectives who happened to be in the Patchogue area received a call about a burglary on Haig Avenue. As officers pulled up, they observed a man coming out from the backyard and into the driveway. That is when police arrested 19-year-old Marvin Escobar.

Sanchez and two other men were arrested shortly after when police say they spotted a van circling the area.

Police say Sanchez would scope out a neighborhood and look for vacant homes that would be easier to burglarize.
