 Powell -> Butte |
Still need to get a smokeping server going, but I did finally get around to getting Cacti going Sunday night (by night I mean Monday early morning ). Here is a graph of latency from my server in Powell to my router here in Butte. Smokeping from DSLR confirms from all three of their servers that there is a nightly latency spike elsewhere on the Bresnan network even with a bonded D3 connection.
EDIT: I realize what I said about it being internal holds no water from just latency spikes, but I will take some measurements tonight to see how things go...

christcorpPremium join:2001-05-21 Cheyenne, WY kudos:1 | I use a lot of network monitoring tools like solarwinds and similar. Everyone I've seen, where the DAY is listed, that is the beginning of the day. time: 00:01. So according to your graph above, it looks like you delay is between the hours of 6:00am and 12:00pm (Noon). Of course, you could have set up your monitoring software differently. Just saying that all the ones I use, the day/date listed is always the beginning of the day. |
|
 | In this case, the day is at noon with equal amounts of time on either side of the day label marking the beginning and end of that day.
(You can see little lines going below 0 on the Y axis that delimit the days) |

4 edits | reply to Garrett21120 Looks like a lot of Bresnan's handoffs to their peers are saturated. Going to be hard to hide behind the veil that the upstream providers are to blame when there are three clearly shown here that are having issues on the handoff. I highly doubt AT&T Worldnet, Cogent, and Level3 are all experiencing the exact same issue. More than likely it is the common denominator in this case - Bresnan/OOL.

Alrighty - now that the latency spike is over for the night here are some smokepings to ponder over.
Something to notice. The route from Powell to Bresnan's Billings and Missoula speedtest servers were having issues at exactly the same time my connection from Butte outbound to DSLR LQ1, VCN, Youtube (NOT CDN, just website), Google, and Level3's DNS server. Coincidentally I accidentally closed out of the mtr trace from Powell to those servers before I could capture the data. There's always tomorrow.
Also notice, not all of their speedtest servers and not all servers I was pinging to from Butte had the issue. Meaning a) it isn't my connection and b) it isn't the upstream providers as shown by my traces in the post just before this one, unless of course Level3, Cogent, and ATT are all suffering from an identical network issue as the other at the exact same time...Not likely...Also take note that the ping from me here in Butte to Bresnan's own speedtest server in Grand Junction, CO has the exact same spike at the same time. That is all internal and has nothing to do with outside peers.
I should note that the Powell connection isn't on Bresnan, it is using TCT's FTTH. The Butte connection is on Bresnan. |
|
 | Wow KK - thanks so much for getting this data (not sure I understand it all though..lol) - but if I understand you correctly, it's congestion/overloading on Bresnan's/OOL router/servers before it gets handed off to the peer agreement's servers/routers that are causing the lag/latency issues at night?
If so, any ideas on how to (or if we can approach) them to beef up the network or move us to another router/node (if that's even an option)?
Thanks again and sorry for my network/IT ignorance (or wrong terminology) here & thanks again guys for the help.... |
|
 | Exactly. This is Bresnan's problem and not that of the upstream providers.
Take these two traces, for example. One is coming into Bresnan's network from the outside and the other leaving Bresnan's network. Both are using different carriers from Bresnan's perspective. I have also attached traces from two carriers at the end.

Notice the significant jump in latency just after hop 18 which shows up as blnmtfh1cr5-ge-3-0-0-u0 which is inside Bresnan's network already and is some router in Billings.
Now from Butte going out.

The latency here starts after hop 8 which is identified as blnmtdc1dr5-GE-4-0-3-U0 and is also in Billings. I suspect something is going on in Billings on Bresnan's side, not with the upstream carriers.
In fact, here are some traces from those carriers.

Again, notice that the latency spike in both of those happens just after Billings... |

I was looking up bresnan (OOL-west) and docsis 3.0 and this post was the top search... like many on here for the past 6-8 weeks ive had issues with speed during the day, not even peak hours. I haven't been able to stream HD via Netflix(Consistently 1-2 bars) and Hulu buffering so much its unwatchable. Download speeds from off network servers is generally 1.5-3Mbps(1.5 being the norm) and speedtests have varied between 1-9Mbps with around 2.5 being the norm. However, with USENET I'm able to get consistent speeds of 15Mbps during peak, and 24Mbps during non peak... I guess it just doesnt make sense to me, and despite good speeds using usenet, Im pretty unhappy about not being able to watch netflix, or hulu in HD when I'm paying for a 30/5 line. I really hope if it continues OOL will fix or upgrade whatever the issue is as I can't switch because i'm not close enough to century links main hub(idk if thats the correct terminology) to get competitive speeds, so I'm kinda stuck. |

christcorpPremium join:2001-05-21 Cheyenne, WY kudos:1 | livinfree; where do you live. I have the 30mb/5mb. I live on netflix stream and hulu. I don't have any problems with either. Are you in Wyoming/montana or some place else? |
|
 | christcorp - out of curiosity, can you trace to some of the troubled locations during peak hours for us in MT to see where you go and what is different about your routes compared to ours? Your one trace shows you going through 111.144 which Garett did as well... |

1 edit | Here is the list of places I am having trouble with from here.
lq1.dslreports.com bismuth.vcn.com 4.2.2.1 grandjunction.speedtest.bresnan.net
There are others that I am pinging that I am having troubles with that have caches set up throughout the US but I am not sure which exact IP my Smokeping box is hitting (I will get some exact IPs when it happens again tomorrow night, or possibly Monday as a lot of folks might be busy with the Superbowl). www.facebook.com www.youtube.com www.google.com
Latency ramp-up starts at 6:00pm MST each night and latency levels off at the high point at 8:00pm MST each night. The 'cool-down' starts at 11:00pm MST and everything has settled back down by 11:45pm MST until the next night. This has been an exact pattern for the past 3 nights since I have been monitoring it, almost down to the minute.
Two 'good' destinations that never see problems observed from here are: lq2.dslreports.com speedtest.tctwest.net
Thanks again, and don't let this get in the way of your project... |
|
 | reply to christcorp I'm in Fort Morgan, CO. I've had very few speed issues prior to the end of November. I don't think my problems are bad enough that they will send a tech out, so I haven't bothered calling them yet. The past week has been a bit better though aside from the usual 430-8pm slowdown. If I get some time I'll do some actual testing aside from the speed tests which aren't very helpful. |

 | As I suspected, tonight's looked pretty good considering there was hardly any load on the internet due to the Super Bowl. With this being the first year where the NFL was streaming it online I thought the load might have been higher.
One big thing I notice about the trace to VCN's speedtest server is that you go through Qwest and make awesome times whereas we go through Cogent.
