[Troubleshooting] Incoming calls fail

I have been a Verizon Wireless customer for more than 10 years. I have a problem that is getting progressively more frequent. Incoming calls go straight to voice mail. On a bad day, more than half of incoming calls will suffer this problem.

The calling party will hear a few rings, and then my voicemail announcement. My handset does not show a missed call. If the caller chooses to leave a voicemail, I won't get a notification for 30 minutes or perhaps an hour.

This problem only occurs when I am at home. At my home, Verizon's signal is very strong and consistent. I live near two freeways, so perhaps Verizon's towers are simply overwhelmed by cell phone traffic.

I have complained to Verizon three times. Each time, I was given a pure B.S. response. Get a load of this:
1. Update your roaming list frequently.
2. Update the software on your handset.
3. Switch to a more expensive service plan (!)

I have done all three of those things, in the spirit of trouble-shooting and cooperation. The third one got me a bit angry when it failed to help, so I switched my plan back to what I have had for a decade.

The one thing that Verizon has so far not done is to determine why their network is failing to route calls to my home location.

Any suggestions for addressing this issue? In particular, I would like to induce Verizon to investigate their network instead of wasting time with my handset. Obviously the problem is not my handset. Any suggestions for lighting a fire under Verizon?

Overloaded towers?

But it can be your handset. I can sit next to friends and we can call each other to test this (and have done it). Some phones (mine!) will not ring. And the message for a voice mail sometimes can delay for hours. I hate getting a ding at 2 am for a message from 6 pm.

I previously had a phone that would always work when others wouldn't. Sadly, it's dead now. My Droid doesn't even get the same reception as a cheap LG.
