DNS unresponsive / recurring problem

I have a recurring issue where the DNS is unresponsive for periods of 5 to 30 minutes. Internet is fine, and suddenly I get "unknown server" for every web address I try to reach. I can access them via IP address, though.
e.g. dslreports.com does not work, but 209.123.109.175 works.
After a period of time, the issue disappear, but it is very annoying.
Calls to support just net me a wasted hour of my time, along with "reboot the router", which 1. is just the scripted BS catch all, 2. interrupts current recordings to the DVR, and 3. most importantly, interrupts the existing VPN connection to my office I work with.

Does anybody else have this issue ?

Which DNS servers are you using? You might try some of the publicly available ones. Also, check your router for a firmware update, as it may be the source of the problem.

I don't have that issue when I'm using the legacy Embarq DNS servers on other systems. I don't have problems on my network, as I run my own DNS servers.

I'm using the default DNS router settings, which for me are

Primary DNS Server 208.13.143.36
Secondary DNS Server 65.41.120.51

Next time I have that issue, I'll try switching to a public DNS.
Thanks !

Those are the ones that I have never noticed a problem with.

You might try swapping the Primary and Secondary numbers and see if it makes any difference.

Haven't had the same problem. You should try OpenDNS, use
208.67.222.220 & 208.67.222.222

Mine started doing this recently using 205.171.3.65 and 205.171.2.65.

I changed DNS to another but it didn't fit it.
The problem is that the internet traffic stops every 10 minutes, pauses for a few seconds, then starts up again.

The DSL modem does not show any disconnects and no errors are shown. It is a Zyxel PK5000Z, only using it wired.

What you are seeing are symptoms of an issue other than DNS. To resolve it will require some troubleshooting, possibly a little experimentation, and you may never solve it. It could be interference from something in or around your house, and it could be something further up the line.

Some questions to help you get started:

Are you using a separate router, or the one in the modem?
Have you checked for firmware updates for all your devices?
Have you checked all the phone jacks for filters?
Do you have an alarm on the line?
Do you have an outdoor extension?
Is the timing consistent between the pauses?
Is it continual, or only during certain times of the day or night?
Are you using a SamKnows router?

I asked a neighbour they are having problems too.

I used this site tool's ping test.

What does this indicate?

Hello!

Typically the best way around a DNS issue is, as suggested above, try one of the public DNS after verifying that the primary and secondary you're using is correct. If you're still having trouble with this, go ahead and email us with the details and your account information. We'd be glad to check into this for you.

CL must have fixed the network, I think they had some problems between a few locations on the West coasts paths. All fixed now!
Thanks

Yes, I see a long delay and then DNS kicks in.

Put Google's 8.8.8.8 as your first DNS Host address and you'll see your performance improve greatly.

Oh well, mine is broke again.

While downloading a file or watching a video, I get network drop outs. Looking at the DSL modem stats, it doesn't show any DSL signal drop outs.

When performing a continual ping to the first hop, every 5 minutes or so it times out.
