 | Need help with WNR1000v3 I just let the router upgrade itself to 1.0.2.42 and now I'm getting extremely bad wifi connectivity.
When I try to roll it back to 1.0.2.26 I get "Firmware upgrade failed. Please check your file." I am using a wired connection to the router.
I can't find any custom firmware for my router either. Can anyone help me? |

I can't find any custom firmware for my router either. Can anyone help me? When I go to the Netgear FTP site ( »ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/ ) I see two different 1.0.2.26 firmware files for the WNR1000v3. You might want to download both of them to see if one of them is compatible with your router. Both Netgear and Linksys sometimes make hardware changes in products without bothering to change the model number (or perhaps just making a subtle change in the model number), and then you have the problem of firmware compatibility between the hardware versions.

 | I am getting an error with both 1.0.2.26 versions from the FTP link. They appear to be the same files I originally tried from here: »support.netgear.com/app/answers/···nr1000v3
I was able to re-flash the 1.0.2.42 successfully, so I don't think it's a problem with my connection to the router. |

| I have on a few occasions run across a vendor supplied firmware update that would also modify the boot code and make reverting to an older firmware difficult (if not impossible).
I wonder if perhaps the newer 1.0.2.42 contains a "fix" for the WPS vulnerablity, and Netgear has disabled the ability to reload a previous version for that reason?
I had a need to downgrade a Linksys router recently, and ran into a similar problem. In that case, the router appeared to accept the older firwmare, and reboot, but after the reboot, the newer firmware was still the active firmware. I did a pushbutton factory default reset, and then I was able to install the older firmware. If you have not tried doing a factory reset, it might help. -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower |

 | I did try. Held the button down for 10 seconds. Appears to have reset everything, but I'm still not able to install the new firmware.
So I may be out of luck unless netgear fixes this, or until the DDT-WRT finishes their custom firmware for my router? |

I don't know if it will help with the WNR1000v3, but with some routers I have had some success with holding the reset button down for about 30 seconds, then powering of the router while still holding the reset button in, and then powering it up with the reset button still depressed (keep it depressed for at least 10 seconds after power up). For some routers, that Mickey Mouse procedure will do a more thorough reset. That was what I had to do to the Linksys router that I mentioned in my previous post.

The 1.0.2.42 firmware seems to be new, so perhaps if others also report problems with it, Netgear will release another firmware to fix the problems. You might want to check the Netgear forum (the real one, not this one), to see if others have been reporting problems with the new firmware (and post your problem there). Opening a trouble ticket with Netgear might also help (it would at least notify them of a potential problem with the new firmware). I have not had to contact Netgear support for a long time (I have not had any problems with Netgear products), but I know that when I have done so in the past, they were a lot more responsive than Linksys or D-Link (both of which have almost useless support for their residential/soho products). -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D. | I tried that method for resetting the router, and it's still failing to install the previous firmware. Darn, well I guess it's off to Netgear support.
Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it! |
