[Internet] Sagemcom F@st 2864 usb printer

Hi. I realize Bell does not support the configuration/use of printers with the Connection Hub, but I was wondering if any of the users out there had gotten a usb printer to work with the hub? I have a Brother HL-2040 printer that I've plugged in to one of the usb ports. The Connection Hub detects it and lists it under the USB connected devices. If I look at Network Devices, it is also listed there (with no IP address). This is not a wireless printer.

In the past I had this connected to my tomato router and it worked by adding a standard tcp/ip printer port at the router's ip address, setting the protocol to RAW, the port number to 9100, and then adding the proper printer driver. This does not work with the F@st 2864 router.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

If you cannot find out what settings to use for the connection hubs print server you can reconfigure the tomato router to be the print server for the hl-2040

Usually with usb printers connected to a network device it is because the network device has a "print server" built in.

If you have a printer driver already loaded on your computer, you will HAVE TO DELETE IT AND REINSTALL.

Login into the Control Panel, click on printers and delete the Brother HL-2040 printer.

1. Click on add printer - An Add Printer Wizzard may start.
2. Select - A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer.
3. Select - Browse for a printer.
4. Select the device where the printer is attached. Make sure the printer is turned on.
5. Follow on screen instructions.

Depending on the version of Windows you are using, the headings and wording MAY BE DIFFERENT.

There's no need to delete the printer, just add a new port to the installed printer

If you know what the port is, other wise that printer, previously connected somewhere else won't work.

I have a networked Dell Colour laser with IP 192.168.0.xx - port 9100.

Also a Dell usb monochrome printer attached to a DLink NAS DNS-343. The printer is listed as a virtual device; no port number.

Windows can set the printer up for you.

If the OP uses the tomato router, he/she has to connect the tomato router and change no setttings.

If he/she does NOT use the tomato router, AS I POSTED ABOVE.

Hi

If your HP LASERJET 1200 is installed on a (your) computer there are a few steps to ensure success.

First; Computer systems these days deal with one of two options.

1. Temporary identification assignments.
2. Permanent identification assignments.

DHCP server issues do not always work because the server won't impose a new IP or the receiving device won't relinquish a previously assigned address; resulting in 2 devices with the same address.

The information listed here WILL REQUIRE all devices to either be turned OFF or RESET. This includes all computers, all printers and the router. Since I don't know your setup, pick what is appropriate.

Let's begin:

1. All devices OFF.
2. Disconnect all cables from the Sagemcom router except the phone line cable.
3. Connect the printer USB cable to the Sagemcom modem.
4. Restart the Sagemcom modem and WAIT. This may take 2 minutes or more.
5. Turn on the Printer AND WAIT until the printer has rebooted. This may take 60 or 75 seconds.
6. Restart the original computer that had the HP LASERJET 1200 connected.
7. Login to the Control Panel.
8. Click on Printers.
9. Select the HP LASERJET 1200 and DELETE the printer.
10. Turn off the computer.
11. Connect all Ethernet cabled devices to the Sagemcom.
12. Power up a wired computer.
13. Login to the control panel
14. Click on add printer - An Add Printer Wizard may start.
15. Select - A network printer or a printer attached to another computer.
16. Select - Browse for a printer.
17. Select the device where the printer is attached. Make sure the printer is turned on.
18. Follow on screen instructions.

Repeat ALL steps 6 - 18 for all wired computers.

Login to each wireless computer and after bootup and follow steps 6 -18
While this LOOKS like an horrendous amount of time, for several wired and wireless computers, it can be accomplished within about 1 hour.

Your first attempt will take a few hours. If you reload computers regularly, and add in devices, it WILL become second nature.

THIS DESCRIPTION takes into account MOST issues that are NOT supposed to happen such as duplicate IP's etc.

I will review this on post Feb 1.

Please check back on Feb 2 in case of edits.

PLEASE . . . follow ALL the instructions IN ORDER if you do NOT UNDERSTAND the issues.

For those who know the issues, sorry for these long posts.

For any printer, login to the manufacturer's web site and DOWNLOAD the LATEST drivers.

For the HP LASERJET 1200 login here:

»h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Te···en&cc=ca

Select your operating system and download the latest driver. Save it to some place convenient.

USE THIS driver; NOT the CD that came with the printer.

Why not use bridge mode?

This is your call.

Explain how to make "bridge mode" talk to a USB printer.

Hi Rick. I tried to follow your steps twice and it's still not working. My setup is 2 new desktop pc's running Windows 7, and a XP based desktop. The printer is confirmed in the Sagemcom USB connected devices as "Hewlett-Packard_HP LaserJet 1200" As I proceed and try to use this printer in the add a printer section of control panel I encounter an error in the print output.

I've done google searches on this printer and it seems Windows 7 and networking this printer are problems.

This printer was released in May 2001 and is a PostScript printer. The PostScript drivers may need to be on the device where the printer is located. That will not be possible with any print server like the Sagemcom.

To test this you could install the LJ 1200 on one computer and try accessing it through file and printer sharing form another computer.

The above instructions are the same. You should see the printer attached to a computer instead of the Sagemcom.

We have a Dell 1110 laser on a print server. When the Dell 1110 is attached to a computer, you can select double sided printing. The printer will print all the odd pages. You simply remove the pages as the are in the output tray and put them back into the input tray and push the cancel button on the printer. The even pages are printed from the last page and from the bottom of the page to the top.

On a print server, that specialized function does not work. If the printer is attached to a computer, the specialized function only works where the laser is attached and not with any computers connecting via file and printer sharing.

New home/office USB printers do not use PostScript.

Dell has:
An 1130 (USB 10,000 monthly duty cycle and 8MB SDRAM)for $79.00 or
An 1130n (Network laser - 12,000 monthly duty cycle and 64MB SDRAM) and it supports PostScript for $149.00. PostScript will work with network (Ethernet) printers.

this is very true. I have an HP laserjest 1020 and this printer requires the firmware to be sent to the printer everytime it's been powered off. this is normally a function of the windows driver.

You can test this SOMETIMES by powering on your pc with the printer connected directly to it via usb. print one page. unplug the usb cord from computer and plug it into sagemcom (or any network print-server) without power-cycling the printer or your computer.

Now attempt to print to it from the network.

If it works this way than you can almost bet it requires firmware ( or post script drivers) to be sent during the first printing of a document after computer or printer power cycle- which will never be possible to with the sagemcom

With his existing TomatoUSB router, of course.

Thanks for all the help! I followed RickStep's instructions, but for some reason nothing is detected when I try browsing for the printer. I'm using Windows 7, and turned on network discovery and file sharing/printing while trying to install... but no luck. Trying to add a new TCP/IP port doesn't seem to work. No IP address seems to be assigned to the printer and using the Sagemcom's IP address doesn't work.

In response to why I did not try bridge mode, the tomato USB router is wireless G, and thus not as good at handling 25/7 speeds... Thought it'd be simpler to just use one device (if it worked). If you hard reset the Sagemcom, to put it in to bridge mode can you change it back if you don't like it?

I know, I gotta get a better router some day. But other than the printer, the Sagemcom's actually been working well for me.

Click for full size
Hi liaden,

This post is a follow on to previous posts and is to provide clarification, NOT add new information.

Refer to images in the attachment by number. The images are for Windows XP. A Windows 7 computer wasn't available when I did this. The screens should be similar.

I would open a second window (Page - New Window in Internet Explorer) and make that window full screen. Double clicking the image will make the image full screen. You can then switch between the text in window 1 and the image in window 2 easily.

Open Control Panel

1. Select Printers and Faxes
2. Click Add Printer and the Add Printer Wizard should start.
3. Click Next
4. Select A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer
5. Select Browse for a printer
6. Find the device where you attached the printer. In this example the printer was attached to a D-Link NAS device, a DNS-343 with a print server. Click the + sign to the left.
7. When the + sign is clicked the dropdown will show lp (line printer) and list it as a USB device. This is how the Dell 1110 USB printer is listed BEFORE the driver is installed. Select "lp USB" and click next.
8. A warning message; click yes.
9. Another warning message for me, because I already have a driver for that printer installed on another device. You should not get warning message #9 if there are no drivers installed for your printer.

Thanks again for your help. I've tried various things. All my computers are on Windows 7 right now, and the networking seems to be different from what it used to be. Turned on network discovery and file sharing, changed it to a Home Network, created a homegroup, etc. When this is done I can see the Sagemcom Hub on the network, it lists media files, but there is no way to see the printer...

I've followed your instructions exactly, from deleting the old printer, rebooting, etc. to your latest instructions. It always gets stuck at step 5. When I browse for a network printer it runs for a long time, then says "No printers were found." I wonder if this printer just isn't supported. Considered trying out another operating system to see if it'd work, but it's too much bother right now.

I'll just have to plug in my old router when ever some one needs to print, and have them connect to that for now.

hope your guide helped someone though!
