Re: [Internet] Sagemcom F@st 2864 usb printer

Keep monitoring if you can. Desktops here are all XP and the laptops are all Windows 7.

If I can get my hands on a laptop this weekend for an hour I will post back, likely by Monday. If not, it may be a week Monday.

Rick.

I'll just have to plug in my old router when ever some one needs to print, and have them connect to that for now

With just a few simple configuration changes to the old router and the way it connects to the network it will work like a print server only

Since my last post I have been rummaging the Internet (mostly Microsoft) and there seem to be a lot of issues with printer sharing and Windows 7 and how Windows Firewall interacts with File and Printer Sharing.

My household has two laser printers in use; a Dell network colour laser and a Dell USB laser. It seems that I setup the desktop computers which run Windows XP to access both printers and the laptops to only access the networked printer. I probably had problems too with USB/print server issues; and since the laptops were setup months ago, I had forgotten that fact.

While wayjac may be able to help in this case, I suspect the issue isn’t the Sagemcom; but either an issue with Windows 7 or and issue with the Brother driver or both and trying to connect to your printer via your old router may be just as frustrating as it has been with the Sagemcon.

You could start here:
»support.microsoft.com/mats/print···roblems/

Microsoft knowledge base for Windows 7 is here:
»support.microsoft.com/ph/14019 and search on install a printer connected to a print server

I have been reading through issues and replies at the links below and there may be an answer to your problem somewhere in the replies, however there are thousands of threads.

1. »social.technet.microsoft.com/For···/threads and search on printer sharing
2. »answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind···indows_7 and search on printer sharing

Some links may help here:

»answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind···c54d512e

»answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind···2ed4de85

»answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind···d9e833e4

»answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind···1316f1d4

»answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind···54da89fe

I have started making notes to extract specific points but it will likely be while before I can put together a line by line approach to trying to fix this issue.

It seems that with all the printer difficulties and Windows 7 over several years; Microsoft has not posted a consolidated article.

In the past I had this connected to my tomato router and it worked by adding a standard tcp/ip printer port at the router's ip address, setting the protocol to RAW, the port number to 9100, and then adding the proper printer driver

Here's what you need to do to use the tomato router as a print server
Change the tomato router's ip address to 192.168.2.250 and disable the tomato router's dhcp server
Connect one of the tomato router's lan ports to a sagecom lan port
You now need to set up a new tcp/ip printer port or change the existing printer port ip address

thanks! I will try that! If that doesn't work I'll look through Rickstep's links this weekend and see if I can find a fix there. Thanks again, I'll let you know how it goes.

Happy wayjac was able to help you connect the printer from multiple locations.

I have never understood why the intelligent types at Microsoft make "what used to work in Windows XP" fail in Windows 7 and then market that they made connecting printers simpler.

To me an USB printer is the same as any other USB printer. The problem is they are NOT and sometimes unless the print server, the Sagemcom, is NOT a listed device, the installation fails.

I will bet that when Windows 8 is released the Sagemcom will be listed as an approved device, while in Windows 7 the approval process, which should only take 4 weeks drags on for months and Microsoft is too chicken to list a device early.

Clearly the issue IS NOT the PRINTER.

Device approval within Windows (Microsoft) should NOT take longer than 4 WEEKS. One week to deliver the product and paperwork to Microsoft, 2 weeks for testing, and 1 week to generate the report.

In Canada today, I can get a CSA, ca UL us, FCC and IC (Industry Canada) and European Union Approval within 4 weeks.

Microsoft, who owns Windows XXX needs to fix this issue 10 years ago.

Rick.
