[Extreme Plus] Rogers routing problem

Having no luck pinging the 173.35.113.x subnet from my cablemodem at home (Bathurst-St Clair) nor the office (Yonge-Lakeshore). Can ping Ok with my Dsl, or when using the Rogers 3g.
Rogers Phub returns " destination net unreachable" from both cablemodem locations.

You're pinging another Rogers user's cable modem based system

To prevent DoS attacks, Rogers blocks ICMP ping requests (and hence tracerts) to other users on Rogers network. That doesn't mean you can't get there by applications, just not by pinging it.

Many years ago there were a lot of problems with malware (and ping floods by vindictive friends) within Rogers network. So to help limit this problem, they blocked a few ports such as Microsoft networking ports (NetBeui, NetBIOS etc) and pinging systems within Rogers. A lot of destinations for malware were "tested" by probing with pings.

This is why you can't get there from here if here and there are on Rogers cable network.

Up until Thursday I've been pinging it each week. I have a router on that subnet that I administer.

And I haven't been able to ping other Rogers addresses for over 5 years. It didn't happen to everybody at the same time. Rogers administering of their routers etc isn't exactly proficient or consistent.

I think you are right. I spent hours on the phone with their tech guys both residential and business and no one mentioned anything about turning off ICMP requests.
I tried my remote cameras and they work.
Tnx.

reply to Evan
They haven't "turned off" ICMP ping requests, just blocked them at the CMTS routers for all Rogers destination IP addresses.

It's to stop on network ping floods and to stop us trying to do our own troubleshooting for on-network problems.

Like at one point they took system names off many of the hops, so you don't know where things are being routed.

Thanks again.
I wish they would let their staff know.

Well, they don't think their customers should know about things like ping and tracert ... so that way their customers aren't confused by technical details! They would rather the internet be like a Mac ... you as a used don't need to know how it works.
