[mba] wireless connectivity on awake

not sure if anyone else is having this problem. i've seen it scattered in a few places across the interwebs, but no 'definitive' solution -- so i'm hoping the apple hivemind here will have a fix.

i7 mba running 10.7.2. when i open the lid to resume the macbook, it will never automatically connect to my desired wireless ssid. more often than not, it will ask me to choose the ssid, regardless of its position in my 'preferred' networks, and some times it asks me to re-enter the network key, even if i've checked the 'save' button.
i've removed and recreated my profiles twice, but have not done a disk permissions repair.

anyone else have this problem?

Not quite, but my Mini running latest Lion, sometimes will not switch on the Wi-Fi network.......after a restart.......I have to manually enter System Prefs, delete profile, make a new Wi-Fi profile and then pray......

I have trashed Apple Wireless/Network Prefs , repaired Permissions etc, and re booted more than once problem still persists.....usually right after a re start..........................

My ssid is hidden, but Mac knows which 2.4/5Ghz to look for, it's listed right in the Preferences.......

My boss' MBP does the same thing since he put Lion on it. on Snow Leopard it never had an issue.

interesting.
i wonder if its more of a lion thing than a hardware/mba thing.
either way -- its pretty sad that it happens. its a little frustrating.

Did you load Lion over SL? The reason I ask is that I did on 2 machines (however, not an mba).

I erased and did a fresh install on both machines and I noticed that some things now work better/different. However, I was not having your particular problem with my Mac that I use wireless, so doing an erase and fresh install would be a drastic step.

box came preloaded with 10.7.1. i used the mac update to bring it to 10.7.2.
i've been anxiously awaiting 10.7.3 -- as i've heard some rumours that this is supposed to be fixed in that version, but i'm not holding my breath.

i guess i should clarify that it only happens when i shut the lid on the mba. if i leave the screen "up" and it sleeps that way, the wireless always resumes correctly when i enter my password to log on.
i'm sure there is a difference in the way the box 'sleeps', but i don't know enough about it to know one way or the other.

Looks like Apple is taking its time with 10.7.3. However, it shouldn't be that far off for they are on their Delta build for Developers:

A few wild guesses...
Have you updated the router's firmware. Probably not a fix, but you never know, many connectivity issues are a result of out of date routers.
Does this only happen with your Air? Do other computers using your network have same issue? Does your Air have this problem in other networks (such as at a friend's house)? At least you can pinpoint where the problem is.
You try a complete modem, router power cycle?
Is you router ancient?
I don't want to spend your money, but if it were me, I'd buy a new Airport Extreme (Apple products play nice with each other) install it and see if it resolves the issue, if so, great, if not, return it.

Just a few wild guesses, though

He's had Lion on his MBP since day one, so it's gone thru 2 updates and didnt fix it yet. He ran SL on it for 6 months with no issues.

And we have airport extreme router (4th gen, updated firmware) at work so there should be no "incompatibilities".

wireless ap is a cisco 871 that i've no longer used at my edge (its been replaced with a cisco 2821).

Does this only happen with your Air?

yes. i have several wireless pc's in the house, including several running various linux distros and several running windows 7. all are of various ages and wireless cards. no issues.

Does your Air have this problem in other networks (such as at a friend's house)?

every single wireless network i attempt to connect to. no wireless network i use has an ape -- but many of them include enterprise grade cisco gear, including one with the most up-to-date ct5508s on c3502i ap's running 7.0 code. (bleeding edge). still the same issue.

You try a complete modem, router power cycle?

power cycle isn't necessary.
the wap is about 5 or 6 years old -- but again, it only affects the air. regardless of the 'autoconnect' -- it doesn't explain why the mba will sometimes 'lose' the password to my wireless networks.

I don't want to spend your money, but if it were me, I'd buy a new Airport Extreme (Apple products play nice with each other) install it and see if it resolves the issue, if so, great, if not, return it.

as a last resort -- but its putting a band-aid on a problem, even if it works. i'm highly mobile and bounce around a lot for my job.

on a side note -- the same effect happens when i turn on 'tethering' on my ip4 running 5.0.1 code.

Don't bother with an Airport Extreme, like I said it doesn't fix the problem, if you're having it.

At work we have an AE, and at home my boss has a latest generation Time Capsule, and it happens to him at both locations...

turn off bluetooth and I bet that fixes the problem- it did on mine. I know it's not ideal, but it's the only thing that seems to fix it (until they provide an update)

i'll try that.
its very not ideal -- since i use my magic mouse quite often and i'm trading one pain in the ass for another.

we'll see if that works.

thanks for the info.
