yazdzikPremium,MVM join:2000-07-26 Honesdale, PA kudos:1 | advice for the lovelorn Dear friends,
With absolutely no law or politics involved, opinions on the following issue:
given amd's release yesterday of the latest fglrx driver which claims to allow compatilbility with switcheroo
given my lack of gaming but absolute need for clear, crsip graphics and use of the laptop as my sole source of anything whatsoever in life
given a three year future proof(I mean the laptop, I shall unlikely last that long)
given the neurotic once a week recompile(which, like smoking, may kill)
Is it then better to go with an all amd setup, A8 chip and 7690 gpu for the little video editing I do, watching auditions of kids who I will never hire, and researching law to rant my bigoted opinions here, or stay within the i7 family for the superior processing power, even better (2g) gpu and hope to deal with the dual graphics card issue with the sandybitch chip?
In other words, given my lack of need to code or game, can I make do without the hassle of the modern intel chips, or will I regret not doing the many workarounds on the web and spending the time playing with the issues a year down the road when the average internet site swallows allthe gpu memory just to advertise potato crisps and porn?
Any ideas, or a simple statement that the issue has been relatively solved will make my day happy, and I shall avoid lengthy missives for a few weeks....

| | I prefer AMD CPU and nVidia based video cards. I don't care for intel CPU's, I find they lack well, inteligence.
I want nothing to do with ATI aka AMD video. nVidia has superior hardware anyway, and does a far better release of OEM drivers for linux.
If your using a *buntu based distro look at the XSWAT PPA to get the most current nVidia drivers. I don't waste time on lamer gamer crud, but be sure you know your chosen video editing software is compatible with the video cards you choose especially if you plan to use any thing special like capture hardware, and that it has been used with the graphics card of choice and the OEM driver, regardless of the maker.
Choice in this is highly subjective like distro, X manager, etc., and I have axes to grind against the ATI division of AMD. As for CPU's AMD rocks! More performance, lower power, lower price. WIN!
Most susccessful uses of multi monitor on Linux I have seen is via the nVidia OEM drivers and its setup program to do so. So if thats a big deal, again nVidia is the way. Another route is Synergy to act as sort of network KVM between multiple PC's. | | GILXA1226Premium,MVM join:2000-12-29 London, OH | said by TuxRaiderPen:I prefer AMD CPU and nVidia based video cards. What kind of intelligence do you find them lacking? From what I know of the chip lines I find the exact opposite to be true.
I do have to agree with the video card stance, though you have to be careful these days with things like optimus, make sure it is a dedicated video card, and not a hybrid solution. -- We don't give a d@mn for the whole state of Michigan... we're from OHIO! I have been very happy with both of them in both their ability to watch high quality videos at full screen, and no hassle dual-screen and projection hookups. | | | reply to GILXA1226 said by GILXA1226: What kind of intelligence do you find them lacking? Part of thats humor, poor to bad humor, but I am here all week, try the veal, tip your waitress.. badump....
AMD has better offerings, lower power, more cores, less cost, and AMD developed the 64 bit set, which intel had to license when theirs fell flat on its face.
I just don't care for intel. I've been an AMD guy since they pretty much came out, and before that an NEC V20 as there were some tricks you could play with pins on the NEC V that you couldn't with intel. Alog with turbo modes v. intel..

As I said in the other thread, I am not on board with this whole mix and match of stuff. One, I want nVidia and not nVidia and some other crud. I also just don't see the point of doing this versus having a chipset with low and high power modes. I have an idea where this may come in to play, in the higher end markets, lamer gamers, video production/editing, CAD/CAM etc.. But really you would want to use a laptop versus a desktop/workstation.. | |
