Re: Suddenlink IS Bandwidth Capping

You got me inspired to figure out how long I'm allowed to use my service. I did the math like you lol.

350GB = 2800Gb

2800Gb = 2,867,200Mb

3600 Seconds in an hour

1 Hour at 50Mbps = 180,000 Mb / Hour

2,857,200Mb / 180,000Mb =

15.87 Hours I can use the internet at maximum. I'm going be calling suddenlink and dropping my internet package down to the 10Mbps. I'm less likely to go over 250 at that speed.

Hi,

As mush as I would like to agree with you, bandwidth is not unlimited it cost money to deliver bandwidth it is not free. It cost infrastructure dollars. Mainly as users are using more bandwidth it cost infrastructure dollars to upgrade existing cabling infrastructure and equipment. Companies cannot stay in business with their current models. Trust me the pigs will go to slaughter. It is unfortunate though that many of the cable companies are taking advantage of this. What you should know and realize is it is not free it does cost.

show me an isp that has a negative profit margin due to inf. costs. oh, there are none. every single company is currently turning an enormous profit. hmmm. and i'm quite positive that at a couple dollar PER YEAR bill increase to every member of their company, their current model is rather safe.

the only reason they would be losing money is that they are losing subs.

Yes actually, it is free. Bandwidth is not a physical resource that is depleted after so much use. The cables in the ground don't run out after so many gigabytes of transfer. The router doesn't need to be replaced if you've used it all up.

Yes there are infrastructure costs, but rather than continue to build said infrastructure to accomidate expanding usage, companies have pocketed everything and reinvested none of it.

In addition, telecoms got 200 billion dollars in federal subsidies to build broadband networks. That money came from taxes, those taxes came from my pocket. What did telecoms do with it? Pocketed it, and lobbied to remove the requirements that they deliver certain speeds of broadband to the country.

LOL. It is "refreshing" to see an artificial limit placed on something and have it spun as "to further enhance your experience"

First, Suddenlink increases my bill by over $5 a month for the exact same service. Now only 3 months later they impose data caps?

How in the WORLD can they sit there and tell me that these are pro-consumer changes?

I am not experiencing any congestion problems in my area, so each of these changes is patently anti-consumer for me.

If they're actively trying to drive away consumers, then they've succeeded. I will be dropping all Suddenlink services on principle due to this policy change (even though it probably won't affect me).

I hope they're happy with themselves.

Knew this was coming from the beggining, i dont blame pete or anyone really besides the monopolys that are in play, suddenlink isnt the only one out their, AT&T, Comcast, Timewarner (I know no caps for now), Verizon (same way as timewarner..kinda hush hush right now), Cox, Charter and a few others im sure.. this prob was looming for years just like someone pointed out on this thread

»gizmodo.com/5830956/why-the-gove···-company

these companys are really monopolys at the local level...and i can see that here in my town also, example.. suddenlink provides internet service here in town 10mbps down and 1 up for 36 somethin.., at&t also provides internet here but i believe its only 3mbps and 15 for the first year..(hint why the price maybe cheaper in my town than some others) now also add in a local isp called extreme internet (uses dail up compression to speed things up, but still not all that great) and they offer it for 15..

wireless services we also are covered by skybeam (sadly I wouldnt even want to try this service mainly cause of the idea of wireless inst that great compared to the wired) and they want 60... for i believe 3mbps

sure in my town you have a few places to choose from BUT IN NO WAY IS THIS COMPETITIVE.. it all is ran on the same wire..(yup SAME WIRE)

So last year our fiber line was cut it was back in september or so, and you wouldnt believe it but every service in the whole town went with it. INCLUDING SUDDENLINK AND AT&T..AT&T owns the wire!!! this fiber line runs threw the town out to west texas it controls everything from bank atms to even the checkout's, hospital lines where down, cellphones off everything..and get this suddenlink had NO idea untill 3-4 hours later..it took AT&T more than 6 hours to fix, it got fixed around 8pm and was off since 10am.., suddenlink more than likely leases or pays somethin to AT&T for it in order to use it..I guess what im tryin to say is suddenlink at least in my town is a pawn or puppet controlled by no other than AT&T

and with that AT&T and suddenlink are not competitve but more of working together..

anyways thats my little rant (ok big rant) lol.. but in all seriousness these companys have whats comein to them, if they would stop for a sec and look at the telephone line companys they will see what will happen.. A new president means a new FCC chairman..

PS: sorry for wrong grammer, and periods and what not..dont flame me its almost 2am and im barely able to keep my eyes open

How much of this move is because of the increased bandwidth saturations from not only Digital Cable but also HD channels and don't forget all the new GO services. HBO-GO, MAX-GO, SuddenlinkGO2 and all that. Instant watching of movies, orders, etc. All of that takes up bandwidth and so increases traffic. Combine that with faster servers to the home and of course there is going to be more traffic. If I can download something at 15MB/S now and then upgrade to 50MB/S do you think I might download more stuff? Of course.

So bottom line, a cap sucks. But if a cap needs to happen for whatever reason a 150 to 350GB/Month cap is not just stupid it's moronic. Just the other day I bought a Humble Pack with a bunch of games on Steam. I downloaded them and according to my usage chart I blew through 35GB on that night alone which included Youtube watching, general surfing and playing Online FPS Games. 35GB in one night. So if I take out the steam portion of the night that would narrow me down to about 10GB in that one night.

Caps needs to be around the 500GB mark and higher if at all. At very least offer a unlimited service. Sheesh.

very true, 500GB is way way harder to reach..,but can be done with videos easy and then they could over charge like crazy for goin over that.

At the same time, suddenlink does offer a business internet 6mbps for 70 bucks a month no caps, so it comes down to what your gonna do.., im not sure weather suddenlink checks to make sure your a business or what..im kinda needin to know cause really i do run a business (i havent went official if you know what i mean) but ive been workin on computers for the last couple of years and let me tell yah 250 gb isnt that much, thankfully I can save the service packs and what not on my local network and go from their.

does anyone know if suddenlink does check?

Re: Suddenlink IS Bandwidth Capping

I only have the option of a 3Mbit plan and so I'm stuck with the 150GB cap. I'm already at 90% usage with another two weeks left of the cycle. The problem isn't bittorrent; I have that capped at 50GB. I extensively use Netflix, Hulu and play online games on both PC and Xbox Live. Oh, I can move 15 miles north and get an unlimited 60/60 fiber connection for the same price as my 3/.5 connection with SuddenLink. If only it was that easy..

Q: How do you know you're getting shafted?
A. When you consider re-locating in order to find a better service provider.

It's simply absurd.

yet not a single person has stated what they plan on doing when ALL isp are capping their service. will it then be a discussion of do i go with the provider that is throttling or adding more bandwidth for more money?

simple fact is that more companies are capping and charging more because they can. want better service at a better price, innovation and competition in the market place needs to be found or these caps and bills are just going to get worse.
