Free wifi is not everywhere. The point of a smartphone is that it has an omnipresent data connection, regardless of if you happen to be near a wifi hotspot. This whole free wifi everywhere thing is a wonderful, warm, fuzzy idea in concept, but it has no connection to reality. Reality is mostly 3G/4G with occasional wifi offloading.
It basically is in every halfway civilized place nationwide. With AT&T, I can drive through tiny towns and highly exurban areas and maintain a fantastic fake 4G connection. If anything, because of congestion they are worse in the cities. However, wifi would be even more scarce out in the boonies.
