VoxOx will forward free to Canada, though they have FAS (False Answer Supervision), which may break your application.

If you have Freephoneline or another way to make free Canada calls, an OBi100 (or an IP PBX) could bridge your GV calls to your cell.

What is your approximate monthly minutes usage for GV->cell?

I'm confused. You first asked about forwarding for incoming calls, so calls to your GV number would ring your Canadian cell phone.

However, a DirecTV receiver/DVR only makes outgoing calls. If you want to use that path, e.g. to order PPV, you could connect the DirecTV box to an ATA registered with e.g. Callcentric, VoIP.ms, or Anveo, set up to send a US caller ID. Or, get a service similar to MJ such as Nettalk.

I think what he's trying (not to) say is that he wants DTV to think he's in the US, so he's got to have a US phone number to give them.

Re: need mj alternative

Try VoxOx. If it doesn't work for you, get a US Value DID from Anveo. $0.99/mo. + $0.005/min. to most Canadian destinations.

Just give them 631-265-0000.   It'll drive them crazy ... really.   Try it.

If nothing but ring tone is what will drive them crazy, that number will succeed...

The message is in Early Media. If you are just hearing ring tone, either you are using a cheap-ass provider such as Google Voice that does not support it, or there is something wrong with your VoIP setup.

Well, yuppers, the test call I did make was using my cheap-ass GV number. My wonderful, free, use-it-for-test-calls-just-like-this free GV trunk from my current, robust, no-problems-with-it-at-all PIAF 2.0.X/Asterisk 1.8.8.X/FreePBX 2.9.X box. I did so just as =many others= on this forum might be expected to do. Scrolling back, I see no mention that I shouldn't do that, and no mention that early media was involved. Absent same, why would I choose to route my test through any of my myriad excellent but PAYGO providers (CC; CWU; Vitelity; Onesuite)?

Sorry it didn't lift your spirits or rock your boat, brg.

Calling 631-265-0000 from my Verizon NJ (PSTN), CallCentric, ATT Wireless, VOIPo, Voip.ms, Voxox, and WhistlePhone accounts all connected me to the old MCI recorded message: "The call you have made requires an initial coin deposit ...."

I often call forward some of my DIDs to this number so that people who pick up my CallerID and then try to call me back are totally confused. They spend hours looking for the coin slot on their telephone handset!

Works from CallWithUs (CWU) as well, but takes a few seconds to connect.

No problem; after Stewart pointed out that it wouldn't work for calls from GV, I called from my Vitelity line and it worked just fine! And I then recalled that I had dialed it once before. Clever...

(GV's apparent failure on Early Media wasn't something that I recall ever affecting me, and E.M. isn't something I much understand. Time to learn more. But otherwise I have no problem whatsoever with GV for outgoing calls, and in fact because it works so darn well (and is free) it is the default outbound route for my PBX unless I absolutely have to send someone my long-term DID, in which case I use CWU or CC or Vitelity...)

Me, too!  I thought Stewart was referring to the Rosetta Stone ... the original Egyptian artifact, not the language instruction media.

Being curious in nature, I Googled "Early Media" which yielded lots of references that expanded on this issue, basically defined thusly:

"Early media refers to audio and video that is exchanged before a call is accepted by the recipient. Early media generated by the caller include voice commands or dual-tone multi frequency (DTMF) tones to activate interactive voice response (IVR) systems. Early media generated by the call recipient include ringback tones, announcements, and requests for input."

[Live and learn.]

Har har har. Yes, I, too, have now started down the path of learning regarding Early Media.

Re: need mj alternative

I don't know DirecTV policy, but DISH Network charges an extra $5.00 per month per receiver that is not connected to a phone line. Each DISH box calls out (a toll free number) at least once a day.
The satellite providers are afraid that some of their paying customers will get full use of the receivers, by taking one to work, or using it in their RV.
If you can't move receivers to remote dishes without an additional fee, satellite has no advantage over cable.

Instead of forwarding to a Canadian number, get a Nettalk from Walmart.com ($49.95)and have it shipped for free to your local store. Porting is now active, and many U.S. numbers (including those used by M.J.) can be ported
