[Chat] A new way to post...

I'm getting lazy in my old age.

I like to peruse and post late at night when I can't sleep. Using my Torch 9800 is becoming a paininnabutt; screen is too small for these"getting older" eyes of mine. So I decided on a solution for my problem. Say hello to my BlackBerry Playbook! I got the 64G version at a VERY steep discount through Amazon. And of course, I promptly rooted it and put Android Ice Cream Sandwich on it. It runs like a dream, and definitely solves the small screen problem for me.

I'm really enjoying the learning curve on this thing. I also think it's an impressive waste of my state income tax return!

Everyone in my family keeps asking me, why I don't get a "smart phone".

It's because I'm not so smart.

The phone I have now isn't that good, (used for a phone ONLY).

I don't "text", don't care about angry birds, or voice recognition. I've seen the i-berries and the screen is too small to browse, and be able to read the interwebs

I jus' want a phone that works well, and the battery doesn't go dead in three days, (which is kinda' odd to me, because no one ever calls me, and if they did, I seldom am in range of a cell tower to get their call).

My sentiments exactly!!!

That's until I broke-down and purchased one for my wife.

Now, I keep asking myself "where have you been all these years!!!"

Besides, Siri doesn't work, I haven't seen my sister ask anything of Siri, not once, without at least having the repeat the question 5 times or just give up. It is definitely not a feature worthy of money, not yet at least.

The only reason I have a smart phone is I inherited it, literally. The main thing I like is they can't get cable run into my room (guy who my roommate paid to try and run the cable couldn't figure it out) and the only way, then, I can watch TV, other than in the living room occasionally, is on the iPhone.

But don't you know it, my favorite show is on right as I type this, and it won't work, it seems sometimes Optimum Online goes offline or something. Frustrating when it is my show (The Good Wife, and I know, it's a show aimed at women, but I like it, tease me if you like, at least I draw the line at soap operas).

Smart phones can do useful things, IF YOU NEED those things. I don't text much since I don't budget it and don't have lots of younger people to text to anyways, and texting seems to be a young person thing. Angry birds was interesting briefly, but if I WERE a game player, I'd rather spend my time playing a full game on my desktop. Internet radio is cool, but usually I am doing other things so listening to Pandora when I don't drive a car, and when Spotify costs money if you want it on a smart phone, well...

But having the iPhone is something I definitely am thankful for, because I live in a tight space and the phone CAN DO so many things and do them fairly well. I don't have a decent clock radio (I've got something, but it doesn't work properly) and the iPhone uses apps some of which are alarm clocks. iPhone alarm clocks are better than, say, a cheap phone alarm clock.

But the thing I do most, watch TV via OOL app, isn't working right now, and frankly, I sure wish the guy that was supposed to run my cable had skills. I could have run the cable myself, but I don't dare getting involved with something like that in a home where I am renting the room and a problem could get me evicted. My roommate doesn't know it exactly, but I've run so much cable through walls it isn't funny, down in Houston, years ago.

If you want to get a smart phone and want to be able to run apps without any doubts of compatibility, iPhone, but if you want the best quality, Droid.

But whatever you do, don't buy an iPhone because of Siri, she just doesn't work well.

Many consider the Blackberry Playbook to be one of the most under-rated tablets. The original retail price was steep, but now they can be had for a very nice cost. After your Torch 9800, this should seem spacious.

We never did go for a tablet (at least not yet), but Anne got a Samsung Epic 4G Touch...and likes it so much that I am picking up one for myself on Wed. Big screen for a smartphone at 4.53". For me, it will do as a "poor man's tablet", as a real tablet is still not portable enough for running around during the work-day, and at home I am still happiest on my notebook. For ebooks I am still very satisfied with my Nook, and I will run the Nook app and Netflix on my new Epic (the screen is amazing) for those waits at motor vehicle, etc.

I have to say though that a 7" (or 10"!) screen would be super, let us know how you like it and give us a review after, Jo!

Re: [Chat] A new way to post...Part II

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I got a Samsung Epic 4G Touch. Of course, as a smartphone it is a phone...but much, much more, letting me do most of what I would use a tablet for.

With a large 4.53" screen, aside of the phone-type stuff, this is what I use it for:

E-books - with the Nook app, it is a surprisingly effective e-reader when I am on the go and without my Nook, very "readable", with the exception of magazines.

GPS - With tele-nav, it is a first-class GPS, allowing me to seek addresses on the fly via voiced command. It also has a great app that will let me immediately find stores, restaurants, etc, nearby wherever I am.

MP3 Player - Got all my favorite tunes as well as Slacker Radio

Digital camera and video - This has a great 8mp camera, and shoots HD video as well. I can send my pics from anywhere straight to my printer.

Web browser - again with a decent sized screen for a phone, this really makes an effective browser when on the go.

Movies/videos - I have my Netflix account for my Roku, which also runs just great on the Epic...nice time-killer when waiting somewhere while out and about.

Card Star and Bar Code Reader - I can read a bar code and look up competitive prices on stuff as well as having my store cards (such as supermarket) loaded, and can swipe it at the kiosks

Also all the regular PIM stuff, such as keeping my appointments, contacts, and such handy.

...andof course, the occasional game...

Although there is a trade off...certainly there are times that a larger screen would be nice, what I really like is that this is the device that I have on me when I most need it...on the go.

I have had smartphones before, but this is really the first one that is fast enough, and with enough screen real-estate to really do all these things very well!
