| questions for cat lovers so my family has decided to get a couple kittens. my wife has finally come to terms with loosing our one cat that we had together for ~12yrs. i have had cats all my life and so now that i am pushing 40 it did not hit me as hard as it did her (it was her first long term pet and she took it really hard- it has been ~2yrs).
he died of renal failure like a lot of cats do now-a-days because of the crap corn and ash that they are fed (and possibly also from the clay based chemical soaked litter).
---so my questions are what kind of food do you recommend (out of the retail brands). and what kind of litter do you use?
in a perfect world i would like to feed them a diet of ~90+% meat but i know that is impractical as i am not going to make my own cat food and i dont think there are any on the shelf like that. as far as litter i am open to all suggestions.
let me know what you all think |

2 edits | We fed them "Chicken Soup" ( »www.chickensoupforthepetloversso···_locator ), but since moving money is tight we've been getting from the big box stores (CS isn't available at Target, Wal-mart, etc).
Unrelated to the food, I lost one over the past summer and the vet couldn't figure out what was wrong (wouldn't eat) and he passed away while he was staying there overnight, and haven't come to terms on that. They are intelligent and will reciprocate your love, you can't take it for granted since you don't know how numbered their days are... -- Moe, I need your advice

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to mr_slick I use Cat's Pride. It is the ONLY litter recommended by the American Humane Society. It comes clump-able or non-clump-able. I've tried every litter, over the years, and liked ScoopAway best until I tried Cat's Pride about ten years ago. Several years ago, WalMart suddenly stopped carrying it. No one else had it on this island and something heavy costs a fortune to ship here from online Mainland stores. Walmart told me they had a gripe about the label wording. Cat's Pride told me they weren't sure what Walmart's exact objection was but said they had been overwhelmed with calls and emails to them about it (to the point that they actually opened a new website just about Walmart's action). Wal-Mart also said they were overwhelmed by the number of complaints when they suddenly removed it. It took over a year but it finally showed up again (same label too) at Walmart and I have been so happy for the last year to have it again.
It doesn't clump as tightly as some (but much better than Walmart's own brand that I had been using) and it is the ONLY litter on the market that does not contain sodium bentonite which is dangerous to your cat's health (and one reason it is the only litter recommended by the American Humane Society). I use the clump-able in the 14lb jug. It has little dust and is anti scent (which is another reason AHS recommends it). It can safely be flushed (because of no poisionous sodium bentonite). It is a very fine textured litter and it will not clump like the posionous ones but it does clump and what little sacrifice to have a healthier cat? 14 pounds of it equals 20 pounds of regular litter and lasts more than a month for one cat.
I use it with Omega Paw litter box (which I highly recommend - been using one for 25 years now) and it works great for the clumps to fall into the drawer although there is some clean litter that doesn't go back into the litter box. But so what? I throw away a bit of good litter but am not poisoning my cat like all other clumping litters do.
I feed my cat Science Diet Indoor Mature (she's eight now) dry food. I like it because it makes the stools smaller and less smelly if you feed it on a regular basis and don't switch from one brand to another. My cat is indoor only in a not large condo and the litter box is in the bedroom. My vet feeds his cats Science Diet but I do wonder if it is hurting her kidneys, although the formula changed a year or so ago and is not as much corn now. I have thought of switching to a natural dry food but I have no idea which might be best and the cost is three times that of Science Diet (which is not a cheap one either) and it would be hard for me to afford the natural products on a long term, daily basis. My vet, and his now retired dad, who have cared for all my cats for 40 years believe Science Diet does not harm the cat and I fed my male cat who got cystitis at one year of age the cystitis diet from Science Diet the rest of his life. He never had a cystitis attack again. It's cheapest obtained from a feed supply farmer's store rather than your vet. I know Hill's wet food was on that list of the poisoned one's a few years ago from China but the dry was not and my vet believes in it. Yes, he sells it (thus may recommend for that reason), but he sells several brands besides it and he recommends a natural brand many times but the price for it is out of my reach.

 | I use one of the Purina special formulas. For some reason, all the cats went on a turkey craze, and that's one of the few turkey formula foods. They will eat duck. None of them like beef or fish. I even had a lamb fancier. She loved it. Vet said cats normally won't eat lamb. Had a hard time finding pet food for her.
I've had two prior cats on Prescription Diet. One live to be almost 20 living on the stuff for 4 years. The other cat was a fusspot and wouldn't touch it. I wound up reading cat food labels for the lowest ash content. |

| reply to mr_slick I no longer have my own pets because of where I live. Roommate has a cat that he sees as something of an annoyance, but she loves me and gives me lots of affection, I will really miss her when I move.
When my guinea pig died a couple years ago it hurt a lot. You might think: "WHAT! Get upset over a guinea pig???" But they are amazing, they have a vocabulary and are quite epressive, and can be very affectionate. They even show jealousy, I had a female one many years ago that got furious when human women came around. I loved that little squeeker so much.
I don't know if I will ever get another pet, considering the heartbreak of seeing them die. I hope I am reunited with all my awesome friends one day. -- Join Teams Helix and Discovery. Before that I was feeding them Science Diet. They still like SC so I put just a little on top to get them started (otherwise they look at me like... "and....?".
To me, it's worth spending a little more on food. I think it makes a big difference as (IMHO) cats digestive system has not really changed much. |

Like you, I have my own thoughts on what's good for cats. (I've never seen a cat stalking an ear of corn, or stand of wheat, in the wild.)
Cats are pure carnivores and their gut is suited for meat all the time. In fact, what do Ferrel cats eat? Birds, mice, small rodents, and insects. All dense muscle protein.
I try to keep my cats diet as close to what they would eat in "the wild" as possible, and they seem to be doing very well with this diet. -- Come fold for a cure with us @ Team Helix.

My cats won't eat canned food (weirdos) even though one cat was born outside and lived there for about 6 months. But they _LOVE_ raw chicken and fish. They will meow up a storm for it. I feet it to them raw whenever I cut it up for dinner. After all, no point in throwing the trimmings away. |

Archer0T8aka UnrealArcher join:2005-01-21 East York, ON | reply to mr_slick I feed my two Blue Buffalo dry food and Purina Fancy Feats wet food.
Used to feed them Blue Buffalo wet food, but one of them has a sensitive stomach and the Blue Buffalo wet makes her gassy. Had her checked by the vet, nothing wrong, no parasites or anything... the food just doesn't agree with her. The Purina wet foods are the only ones that don't give her gas that they'll both eat.
As for litter, I use a wheat based litter since I can flush it without destroying the plumbing. |
