HankIts all relativePremium join:2002-05-21 Burlington, WV | Recommendations Solicited - Inexpensive GB Managed Switch I am looking to purchase a small (12 or so port) managed gigabyte switch. Please provide comments on the switch that you actually have experience with. I am looking at a price range no greater than $250. |

 | Are you after fully managed switches, or can you live with "smart" switches?
Came across this article awhile back on smallnetbuilder that may help.

 | reply to Hank I would just take an 10/100/1000 router and change the IP address to an unique one and disable DHCP. Then connect the two routers together by using the LAN ports. Thats what I did to my old DI-604 to make an 10/100 switch for my TV and bluray player. |

Highlights
Powered by the latest IEEE 1901 technology and four Gigabit Ethernet ports, this provides an all-in-one solution for users to enjoy multiple HD streams, multiplayer gaming and Web surfing simultaneously. Makes it easy to connect up to four media devices. four Gigabit Ethernet ports -- I suspect a typo -- but ???
Also, is it fan-less or how noisy are the fans -- is the question I would want answered. -- David Mozer IT-Expert on Call Information Technology for Home and Business |

My only comment is that you asked for 12 or so, skipped my suggestion for a 16 port jobbie for the 24 port version............... Upgraded requirement or unchecked port greed? |

This is a family board! Careful how you bandy about such speculations here, sir.
My guess is that he had a budget in mind, saw the sticker, and decided to go for it. Funny how fast those ports fill up, too, not unlike the fellow who buys a bigger desk and soon finds it as cluttered as the older smaller one. -- db |

HankIts all relativePremium join:2002-05-21 Burlington, WV 4 edits | Doesn't make any difference if it has a fan that is noisy or does not have a fan. I have a CER in my basement where all my other network equipment resides, any noise it confined to that area. However, according to the information on the Zyxel site it is fanless.
Yep, I absolutely budget for my equipment. I reviewed all the available smart switches, the technical information and users guides. Oh, I also considered how my equipment is currently utilized and how I will use it in the future, then I made my choice. If it turns out that I discover that the switch does not serve my needs or has severe short comings, failures etc, I will replace it. Yes, I felt the difference in price for the additional eight ports wasn't significant so I opted for the 24 port version. They do always seem to fill up.

HankIts all relativePremium join:2002-05-21 Burlington, WV | reply to Hank Received the switch today. Had only a few minutes to play with it today. It was not enough time to draw any conclusions, but there were no surprises.
I purchased from Provantage and was surprised to see that Provantage has a warehouse about a half a mile from my office in Chantilly, VA. I doubt that they do over-the-counter pickup. |

| reply to Hank I've had good luck with anything ZyXel I have used. on ports, when it came time to replace a temperamental Cisco small business switch at home, I was looking at the 16 port D-Link Gbit switch as I don't need a managed switch at home. The 24 port was all of $10 more, so I went for it. Glad I did. I have a move coming up that might require I patch in more ports, so it is nice to have the capacity available just in case it's needed down the road.
The D-Link has been flawless. It too is fanless and it just plain works, and works very well. |
