Comcast in the Philadelphia area is as good as Fios. JeepMatt will back me on this. I can't speak for other areas; but it is just as good.

I can't back that statement. When I switched from Comcast to FiOS I sure noticed the difference and my face isn't up against the screen. I try not to be biased so I'll give credit where it's due - Comcast has greatly improved their PQ to the point where they are a lot closer to FiOS' PQ but still below it ever since they rolled out the Xfinity upgrade. In a side-by-side comparison you can tell but standalone it's not as easy as it used to be.

I will give you credit for that, even if I can't notice it. With that being said, I would rather have more HD channels and give up some modest quality. I don't see the difference, but then again I an older gentlemen.

Thanks for your comments!

Comcast (and other cable providers, except AT&T Crapverse) and Verizon's picture quality are basically identical on most channels. There are not a lot of networks left that distribute their feeds natively at bitrates higher than 13 Mbps - allowing the cable companies that pack 3 HD per QAM to do so without further reducing the bitrate from what's being sent to them.

A&E, History, EPIX, HDNet, HDNet Movies, and TNT are just a few of the networks left which are consistently above 13 Mbps. All the Discovery and Scripps networks are distributed via H.264 so Verizon and Comcast both must re-encode to MPEG-2 and they both do so at similar bitrates.

I don't know why Verizon has such little QAM space left when there's not a whole lot of HD channels these days which require 2 per QAM; most can be fit 3 to a QAM without re-encoding/rate-shaping.

And yet, the difference between comcast and fios in the Philly market is definitely there. Yes, Comcast has gotten better, but I can easily see the difference.

Then it's probably safe to say between the both of us we cover the bases since I'm most likely one of the youngest members of this forum.

I am an older gentlmen too and i want crystal clear clarity, all the Hidef channels available in 3D if possible and i want it as cheaply as i can get, after all. I pay for it.
FiOS claims they are the best, then step up!

I 2nd this... when moving from Comcrap a few years ago, the difference was amazing. And, I also had no PQ issues with Fios, like I had with Comcrap... no macroblocking, cutouts, audio burps, etc.

Now, the difference is much smaller. Can I see it? Yes. Do I care? Nope.

Fios has dropped the ball on PQ. I get PQ issues as much, maybe more than with Comcrap. The macroblocking and cutouts have increased exponentially.

We are going to do a cost-benefit analysis and right now, it looks like we may switch back to Comcrap and save some pretty serious $$$'s for not that less of PQ.

Also depends on the size of your television. 32" and lower, you won't notice much, but I sure do notice being stuck watching G4 in SD.

I know you want more HD, but be careful what you wish for. I am one of the fuzziest MF on this planet, and would rather see Verizon kill ALL SD channels and just push the content out in HD. but just to be repetitious , as it's been said many times i want you to consider the numbers below, between a BLU-RAY movie and a plain mpeg 2 DVD

Blu-ray

Video bit rate (max)1920×1080 (1080p)40.0Mbps

DVD..

720×480/720×576 (480i/576i)9.8Mbps

now they are getting PLENTY of compression since they went from 2 per channel to 3, and I CAN see the difference it's carppy. if they go to 4, well we will be back to the days of Direct TV and snow on the screen , and sorry but I don't care how much sunshine they blow up my yahoo, it will still be snowy crap. and colors that run.

Verizon could have avoided all this problem if their boxes had ports on them that downconvert for homes with OLD SD tv's. they sSHOULD be sending it ALL out in HD. but Verizon got rid of their visionary CEO and got another dick that would rather charge you 3 tiers of HD quantity to extort more money from you.

if you never saw HD in the big CBAND dishes while Direct Tv was up-beaming their snow , then you just don't know what clarity is.

now how about a thread asking to kill SD ?

All Verizon HD boxes have composite video out for SD TVs.
