Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | core 2 duo vs dual xeon Question how does a dual CPU xeon which not sure of the model but between 2.80-3.80ghz compare to a E7800 c2d? |
|
koitsuPremium,MVM join:2002-07-16 Mountain View, CA kudos:14 | There is no Intel Core 2 Duo E7800. I believe you mean the Intel Core 2 Duo E8700, which is labelled "unreleased", which to me means it never came out. I can find lots of news sites talking about it, but all say the same thing: "to be released". This was in 2009. I'm betting it was scrapped given focus on the Core iX platform instead. It's also not shown anywhere on Intel's list of C2D CPUs.
Regarding Xeon CPU models -- you aren't being precise enough, therefore there's no way anyone is going to be able to help you. Which exact series/model were you referring to?
* Intel Xeon 3000 series * Intel Xeon 5000 series * Intel Xeon 7000 series * Intel Xeon E3 series
I didn't include the E7 and 6000 series' because they don't have clock speeds in the range you specified.
More precision please and I'll do what I can. -- Making life hard for others since 1977. I speak for myself and not my employer/affiliates of my employer. |

|
 | reply to Subaru nacona is old netburst based and single core.
I would prefer a core 2 duo. |

As it likely draws a fair amount of power I wouldn't go out of my way trying to come up with a reason to run it. If it's not being used for anything there is probably a good reason for that. |

 | said by Subaru:Do they work well crunching? I've never really checked out xeons. These days they are pretty much identical to the corresponding core 2 or i7 processor at the same clock speed and amount of cache. The only advantage is the ability to put more than one physical package on server motherboards that support dual/quad processors. |

| reply to Subaru As others have said, your performance numbers will be quite similar. A core 2 duo desktop PC is going to use less energy than a Xeon server will, so I would choose the c2d. Maybe you mean the E7500 at 2.93ghz? I have a machine with one of those processors and it performs very well at most any everyday task. |

| reply to Subaru I don't want to go off topic but this pc I can't get into it since someone stupid locked the case (it was never locked before) and now the keys are lost so i'm unable to put the drives back in.. it's one of those barrel key locks.. Besides breaking the case cover any other options?
Server cases are not cheap. |

(youtube clip) in to the video for the side. Server cases are generally steel, or at the very least solid aluminum. Your going to have to drill the lock out, or pick it.

| That's strange, since none of the rack mounted servers I've seen have locking fronts. The desktop one's are a different story, some have locks, and some don't. The difference compared to the case in the video is that HP uses a metal clasp that slides over a metal(?) bar inside the case to lock it into place, rather than the plastic catch. You can see the lock structure here:
You can try breaking the plastic next to the lock off, depending or not if you want to keep the face plate.
What you can try is take one of those cheap Bic Pens remove the ink/ball and see if it will fit into the cylinder. If it does, you can probably manipulate the lock into opening. You could also try ordering keys from HP or Ebay since the keys are often (but not always) the same (is the case on Dell servers). |

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | no, no it's not a locking front it's locking the side panel and it's a workstation not rack mounted.
pretty sure when I last had this open it just used a metal tab that flipped up for lock and down for unlocked. |
|
 sk1939 join:2010-10-23 france kudos:6 | So it's a locked side panel. Is it a traditional lock, or a tubular lock? |
