Re: Twitter users see different feeds based on where they live My understanding is that Twitter was already complying with certain government takedown requests. Tweets were removed from the entire network.
The difference now is that the tweets will remain and residents of that country receive a Blocked-Notice about the tweet.
That allows two countermeasures to occur. 1) Country-shifting IP techniques can reveal the tweet. 2) A user can request a user in another country to re-tweet the blocked tweet.
Twitter is also publishing a comprehensive list of takedown notices at chillingeffects.org.
I find Twitter's policy to be excellent. It minimizes the effectiveness of government censorship.
It's superior to the policies of many US internet companies who can't seem to find enough ways to ingratiate themselves with heavy handed US gov agencies. -- Adopting other people's animosity is The New Stupid. |
