 | Website Technology Choices for new site ?? Looking to a website built for my security business (alarm systems, CCTV, access control, etc.).
The site will not be e-commerce, and will be mainly product and services descriptions, and other informational pages. I will require a customer login, and I am not knowledgeable enough to decide what coding is the best for my needs. I will need to update the content myself, probably on monthly basis at the beginning.
I have bid the job out, and most of the bidders have recommended a PHP/MySQL solution. Another is suggesting Wordpress.
Is Wordpress the way to go?
Thanks in advance. |

| Wordpress is a canned environment used by people who either don't know how to code or are looking for a quick fix.
You probably don't need mySQL if you don't have tons of products to display. You may not need it to be coded in PHP, or any programming language.
But all that depends on what you need to display and how complicated the site interaction is. |

| reply to decin2002 I would steer away from anyone suggesting Wordpress for the website. As suggested above, it's probably being suggested by someone who doesn't know to develop a site, or wants a quick and dirty solution. In the long run, it probably isn't the best solution.
I would look into better, real CMS solutions that offer an authentication feature for creating a secured site as well as a public site. |

Re: Website Technology Choices for new site ?? Thank you for the response. I don't know much about website creation, but Wordpress didn't seem like the way to go. |

Coding the site in PHP is possible, but you might need some sort of middle-ware to interface with the cameras.
It all depends on what you really want. |

 | reply to decin2002 Didn't notice you said you needed a customer login, in which case you do need some sort of server side program to handle that. |

it will cost more but a high quality professional website leaves a better impression with current and new customers. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

WordPress has a lot of flexibility for a template site...and offers a way to get a site with pretty solid functionality up and running quickly...and offers a pretty easy method for the actual site owner to get in there and adjust content after the site is 'done' without having to go back to the developer for those adjustments.
I agree a custom site is usually best, and offers more flexible options and no limitations to what's available as 'precoded', templated, or free plugins...
BUT for a fairly simple site that the owner may want to maintain once the initial design/development is done, it shouldn't just be dismissed. There are a LOT of nice sites out there done with WordPress.... -- Don't Lie - Be Kind - Realize your Potential |
