[BC] Shaw BT Throttling?

I assume this is common knowledge but when I do searches I keep coming up with posts indicating that there is no downstream throttling on BT unless your network is congested.

However, I am using a Shaw connection in Nelson BC and it is the extreme package - I did a speed test and it seems fine. However in using Utorrent I am seeing the standard throttling issues (speeds up to about 50k, then all torrents drop back down to 1k/s or lower, then try to jump back up).

Is this now considered normal for Shaw? It is definitely not my PC because it was working fine in Van yesterday.

I've been experiencing that too-- wired, not wireless on Broadband 50. I have the protocol encryption in uTorrent to "Forced".

Wired as well. Just checked the router, everything is fine. I disabled forced encryption as I think that only worked like 4 years ago.

Shaw only throttle (drop,block,etc..) your packets when you are connected to the internet via their service.

I hope that is some consolation to you.

I just came here from Ontario and I'm still really confused. Is this considered acceptible by people and people still use Shaw?

Even league of legends doesn't work properly on their service.

It's acceptable to them if they pay for Shaw when they can alternatively use the better option.

Yeah, that feeling isn't going to subside any time soon. I can tell you that from personal experience. It's almost like watching chickens running around with their heads cut off.

the thing is...you shouldn't even bother using BT..the speed you get varies. i don't think there is throttling involved for the downstream.

well thats what i'm askin - half of you say it is, half say it isn't. I'm using the same setup I've used forever and yesterday on another connection I was downloading like a boss. Now clearly it's being throttled. So is there a hack or something? (besides the encryption thing)

even with online games i'm getting odd behavior and others have noted (in league of legends for example) that there is some problem with shaw specifically

You would need clear proof to say Shaw is throttling. There could be several factors that could influence the download speed.

As for the LoL issue, if you are speaking of lag and stuff..not much you can do about it until Shaw decides to invest on better routing. Some online games work well, some don't. I'm well aware gamers need very low pings to become competitive.

Well, I know what throttling looks like. Your downloads peak, then jump to 0, over and over and over. Proof is irrelevant - i'm not looking to sue them.

This isn't lag I'm talking about. I'm not able to connect to the PVP chat even though I'm able to game. It's a unique issue that seems to happen with Shaw.

Bad service!

And basically I'm not here to vent a complaint. I'm here to find solutions. Unless your downloading doesn't do what I've described and you haven't done anything odd to fix it, Shaw is treating customers in this area differently than yours.

If you HAVE done something to fix the issue, that's all I want to know.

next time you try downloading stuff from BT, or go to do your chats or whatever, open up 3 command windows and run continuous pings to 3 different sites. More than likely, you have so many connections open that you're choking your own equipment.

OR you could read the whole thread and see that using the same equipment I was downloading like a boss with another connection.

But hey, only if you want to be useful.

Mmhmm. And I was seeing the same behavior after switching to BB50. It fixed up as soon as I dropped my torrent connections from 2000 to 300. And my speeds haven't been affected.

Also make sure you have your upstream throttled some, so it doesn't die on the return path and take the rest of your connections down. Now, I download at 5MB/sec and upload at ~2MB/sec frequently.

Hardware fails over time. But I guess you know that, "Boss".

If you're so convinced, run ShaperProbe and report your results here.

Shaw doesn't throttle Downloads per their AUP. They throttle uploads only when usage exceeds a certain threshold.
