Motor Oil

What is the best motor oil out there?

Its for my spare 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8

You'll get 50 different answers here...

Myself, I use Mobil 1 exclusively. Good low, and extreme temperature protection.

If it's not in use a lot, any good dino oil will do, changed at 5000 or less, depending on severity of service.

There is no "best" motor oil.

There, you can close the thread.

Gee, Wally, I sure hope this turns into another "true synthetic" debate. We haven't had one of those in forever.

I don't know Beaver, things have been pretty dull here lately. Betcha it would liven things up if it did!

The one your car/truck needs, 5W-40, 10W-30, 20W-40 etc!
Actually the best oil is new clean oil!

It's a jeep the cheapest junk you can find.

Ha no one saw that coming.

If you really want to know, go look up test, check drop points and ball tests of different oil.

amsoil is better high up, royal purple big rig trucks are running 50k on and oil change.

If there were a "best" of anything, there would be only one. The "best" is the one that you like above all others.

And Cop cars are doing 15K (remember the tons of idling though)

But if you get Royal Purple remember they now have 3 kinds of motor oil

Warrenty frendly (for those worried that their car will burn oil and to much anti-wear additive will hurt the cats)

HPS basicly the old Royal Purple wich doesn't meet some specs due to higher levels of anti-wear additive

XPS the top end one ment for racing and much higher levels of the additive, only use if you ether don't have cats or know that you won't burn any oil

I've used Royal Purple 5W-20 (as per the spec, and required for proper cam phaser operation) in my 2006 Mustang GT since 1000 miles, and no engine issues what so ever, just upgrades

My first car was a 1951 Studebaker Commander Bulletnose (232 V8) and I used any kind of oil as long as it was cheap. The car ran fine.

Since then, I use any multi-grade oil the dealer or garage uses as they are all good. My cars and trucks have all run fine.

I have never used synthetic.

My 91 S-10 has only had Mobil 1 since it had around 10K miles on it. I changed it once a year for 20 years. It now has 215K miles on it. It's been through -15F in Colorado and 115F in Texas with nary a problem (well, other than it's an old GM that has to leave its mark everywhere it goes now, so I have to top the oil off from time to time).

"no engine issues" doesn't mean diddly squat. I normally use whatever's on sale, and no engine issues at 278k.

I use Walmart's oil and Fram or Motocraft filters. I use the weight and grade of oil specified by the vehicle manufacturer, and change it and the filter every 3-5000 miles. It exceeds all specs required by the vehicle manufacturers.

Is it the "best"? I'd have to find a quantitative definition that I as a relative layman could apply to the products being evaluated.

But I have two vehicles with a total of 533,000 miles between them that have had nothing but Walmart oil in them. Neither uses oil between changes, and neither has had the heads or pan pulled.

On a side note, I always blow into the check valve of the filter to verify that it opens and closes as it should. I've had a couple of filters over the years where the check valve was stuck open.

I don't burn any oil, I don't leak any oil, haven't had to replace any gasket

on my other car it ran dino oil for most of its 150,000miles and I have to have the rear main and some other gaskets/seals replaced

it partly depends on how hard you are on your car too.

Update: I took my car to my local carwash/lube and got a valvoline synthetic oil change, and while I was there my left break light went out, I needed a new air filter, and wiper blades. But I did get a free full service car wash.

Total: $110
